Jake, is that you? The new trailer for the upcoming thriller Nightcrawler is here, and Jake Gyllenhaal looks gaunt and almost unrecognizable.
As seen in pap shots last year, the slimmed-down actor, 33, lost 20 pounds for the movie, in which he plays a character named Lou Bloom, who is fighting for his career and his livelihood.
"I knew that [Lou] was literally and figuratively hungry," Gyllenhaal told Us Weekly in October, explaining that he worked to become his character by getting into a "mode where I was always a bit hungry."
The star's hard work paid off, as he has clearly made a transformation for Nightcrawler. He has since regained the weight, however, as recent photos of Gyllenhaal show him beefed up and bulky.
The intense clip opens with footage of Gyllenhaal as Lou, driving in his car set to audio of him explaining, "I'm looking for a job. In fact, I've made up my mind to find a career that I can learn and grow into. Who am I? I'm a hard worker, I set high goals, and I've been told that I'm persistent."
Lou finds said career in crime reporting in Los Angeles, getting himself into stickier and stickier situations as he repeatedly utters the phrase, "If you want to win the lottery, you have to make the money to buy a ticket."
Also starring Bill Paxton, Rene Russo, and Kevin Rahm, Nightcrawler will hit theaters on Oct. 17.
