Jamie Dornan told Details he's afraid of being murdered by fans irate about his casting at the Fifty Shades of Grey premiere

A role to die for? Fans of E L James’ Fifty Shades of Grey had a lot of opinions about who should be cast as Christian Grey and Anastasia Steele in the upcoming movie adaptation of the novel — and not all of them were thrilled with the choice of Jamie Dornan and Dakota Johnson. Now, with the film just weeks away from its Feb. 13 release date, Dornan is worried about how those fans might react.

Speaking with Details for its February issue, the Once Upon a Time alum said he actually fears for his life after having snagged the highly coveted part following Charlie Hunnam‘s departure in October 2013.

“I think my publicist said, ‘Yeah, mostly good,'” he recalls of the reaction to his casting. “I’m very aware of opinion regarding the film, whether it be positive or negative. It is, by its nature, an easy target.”

Dornan just hopes that target isn’t on his back when fans finally see the movie next month. “I almost don’t want to put this out there into the ether, but I fear I’ll get murdered, like John Lennon, by one of those mad fans at the premiere,” the Irish star, 32, told the mag. “Because a lot of people are very angry that I’m playing this character. And I’m a father now, and a husband. I don’t want to die yet.”

Joking, he added, “And when I do get murdered, people will say, ‘God, isn’t it haunting how he did that interview in Details magazine and predicted his own death on the red carpet?'”

Fear aside, Dornan seems aware that he has a real opportunity in Christian Grey — a role he says he was drawn to because of his own psyche.

“[It had to do with] an attraction and understanding I have for people that are broken in some way,” he explained of his interest. “Not that I’m some broken bird, but there’s a massive element of me that’s fractured from losing my mother so young, and I’m drawn to characters who are wounded.”

He went on to tell the mag that he gets the S&M aspect of the character, even if he himself doesn’t partake.

“Even if you didn’t have Christian’s history of childhood abuse and abandonment, I totally understand why a person would be into it,” he said. “Something like trainspotting or planespotting? I actually don’t get that. But I do understand the psychology of being tied up and getting turned on.”

One part of the character he couldn’t relate to? “Christian’s wild level of achievement and success at such a young age,” he shared. “Christian’s power — I don’t really have any.”

What he does have is endurance. “I’m so competitive,” he told the mag, referring to his love of certain arcade games. “But one thing I learned from 10 years of audition fails is that I’m a persistent motherf—er.”
