Time to reflect on a very famous injury — still shocking 23 years later. John Bobbitt reveals the gory details of then-wife Lorena cutting off his penis on Scandal Made Me Famous: Lorena Bobbitt, debuting on Saturday, November 26. Watch Us Weekly‘s exclusive sneak peek in the video above.
In the Reelz special’s preview clip, John, 49, explains that he was asleep in bed when the June 1993 attack occurred, and it took him a few moments to realize what had happened. (John was later able to have his penis surgically reattached; authorities retrieved the severed body part after Lorena, 46, threw it into a nearby field on the night of the incident.)
“I didn’t know she cut it off,” he tells the camera. “She did it so fast and ran so fast — I thought maybe I saw a little bit of her in my peripheral running out the bedroom door. But I looked down and there was blood everywhere. I applied pressure — I get up and try to put my pants on, and tried to get to the hospital as fast as I could.”
Unable to drive, John enlisted his friend Robby, who was sleeping in the home, to help him get medical attention: “I had to go get my friend up to drive me to the hospital. ‘Come on, Robby! Get up — you gotta take me to the hospital. My wife cut me.'”
“He’s incoherent, too — he was just like I was, so tired,” John continues. “He gets up and goes to the bathroom and brushes his teeth, and he looks in the mirror and saw the blood everywhere. We flew to the hospital — we got there within 10 minutes.”
In the ensuing legal battle, Lorena was found not guilty due to insanity of attacking her husband. She had accused him of sexually assaulting her that night, and claimed that this provoked her attack; John, who maintained they had consensual sex, was tried and acquitted on the assault charge. (The pair divorced in 1995.)
