Chelsea Handler doesn't often apologize for her behavior, but when Kathie Lee Gifford confronts her in the April 1 episode of E!'s semi-scripted comedy series After Lately, the 37-year-old comedienne makes an exception.
"There was an incident where I was booked on the Today show and I called in sick. Later that same day, I happened to be on the Jimmy Fallon show, where I admitted that I had never been sick in the first place. That was a mistake," Handler says in a confessional interview. "However, I later apologized on my very own program to hosts Hoda and Kathie Lee."
Sitting in Handler's lavish Universal Studios office, 59-year-old Gifford tells the Chelsea Chelsea Bang Bang author how she can make amends: "I just thought, 'It's great! I'm here in L.A.' So, I came by and you can now apologize to me in person, face-to-face."
"Oh, now?" a confused and uncomfortable Handler replies. "I'm sorry . . . again?"
Gifford graciously accepts Handler's halfhearted apology. "Anyway, I just thought that would be great if we had that out of the way because then we can help one another," the morning show star says.
The Chelsea Lately host takes up Gifford's offer on the spot and invites staff writer Heather McDonald to sit in on their meeting, who then politely complains she hasn't been booked on the Today show in "two years and seven months."
"Why not?" Gifford says, feigning sympathy. "You were great." Handler then tells the Today host, "It's your show! Can't you put her on there?"
"It's not as easy as that. It's the Today show. It's not the Kathie Lee show," Gifford explains. "I'm one of six hosts."
Handler doesn't buy Gifford's excuse and shouts, "I call bullsh-t!" As the New Jersey native curses up a storm, Gifford comments, "Oh, that's charming. That's so elegant. Classy, classy!"
"I know how you book a television show," Handler shouts. "Please don't try to tell me you can't have her on if you want her!"
Pointing her finger at Handler, Gifford retorts, "You, lady, are going to be the loneliest person in the world. The last day you're alive, you're going to be in bed all by yourself -- and that'll be a first, won't it?"
After Lately airs Monday, April 1, at 10:30 p.m. EST on the E! network. Watch the exchange -- and Handler's caustic comeback after Gifford leaves the room -- now.
