Looks like Katie Holmes won't get her big moment in the sun as Jackie O after all.

A&E has canceled the eight-part miniseries The Kennedys, in which Holmes, 32, stars as former First Lady Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis. Greg Kinnear would have appeared as John F. Kennedy on the series, scheduled to have been broadcast in the spring.

"We are proud of the work all of our talent put into the making of The Kennedys and the painstaking efforts that went into creating a drama that is compelling while rich in historic detail," Muse Entertainment and Asylum Entertainment, who coproduced the miniseries, said in a statement Friday.

"Although we regret this does not fit into the History Channel's plans, we are confident that television viewers in the United States will join viewers from around the world in having an opportunity to watch this series in the near future," the producers continued.

Holmes shot scenes as Jackie O in July, telling UsMagazine.com that portraying the American icon was "really fun! Her clothes were magnificent. I feel really lucky to be playing her."

Deadline.com reports the series -- reportedly scrapped due to pressure from the Kennedy family -- is now being shopped to pay-cable net Showtime.

Katie Holmes wouldn't have pulled it off...she's doesn't have the glamour and sophistication to play the part of Jackie O.. A far cry from Jaqueline Smith who portrayed her in the 80's...

Katie has features that work well, the wide set eyes, brown hair, a slight frame. Aside from that, it will depend on her acting how well she can portray the character. I have my doubts, because Jackie O was polished, worldly & sophisticated in a way I can't see Katie being able to pull off. Jackie's upbringing puts her in a different world, despite Katie's wealth and fame. I'd be surprised if she could do the part justice, but we'll all have to see when this film gets a different carrier.

It probably gave a truer picture of the Kennedys than the family wanted, especially of JFK. A fantasy has been carefully built up around his persona but in reality there wasn't much to be proud of.

Just because she married into the Kennedy's doesn't make it OK for them to pressure them to scrap it. Now, if Caroline wanted it scrapped I'd understand. What is the Kennedy family so afraid of? If they're so perfect then you'd think they wouldn't mind. Hmmm...food for thought!

Katie Holmes will never be able to embody Jackie O no matter how much she may "look" like her. I like Katie but she cannot nor ever will have the class, intellect, and grace that Jackie O had. As we saw in Frost/Nixon and Frank Langella beautifully performing Nixon, the person's vibe and energy is way more important than how a person looks.

I think she looks like her enough. Who would have been better? Katie is a beautiful girl and what was so special about Jackie O? she stayed married to a man she knew cheated on her time and time again, smoked like it was going out of style, married an old rich man for his money, etc. What really makes her so special that Katie can't play her? As far as I'm concerned she was a fashion icon.

@ kim, NO, Im pretty aware that Jackie O is dead, just saying she doesn't resemble her at all, and jackie O was very short, katie is pretty tall, they could had found a better Jackie o!

Good. Casting that trash was an insult to Jackie O!

Jackie O was great with JFK, minus the smoking while pregnant with each of her children, John Jr. was born with a lung disease. I did not like the way she lived her life after JFK's death. She married an old man that she probably had no love for, but married him because he was rich. She had a relationship with a married man for years, because he was catholic he couldn't divorce his wife, being separated is still married in my book. I just don't get way the public is interested.

Think she would have done well playing the role of the former/late 1st lady. Maybe some other channel will pick it up. She kind of reminds me of her in some respect, soft spoken, lady like, good mom. Oh well for now.
