Levi Miller, Pan Star, Talks Hugh Jackman, Learning to Fly: Read the Q&A!

Levi Miller
Levi Miller dishes to Us Weekly about filming Pan.

He’s the reel deal: Levi Miller beat out thousands of kids to score the titular (and his very first) role in Pan, a prequel of the classic fairy tale (in theaters now). In a dark twist, Peter is kidnapped and whisked off to Neverland, where he teams up with a cast of famous faces including Hugh Jackman, Rooney Mara, Garrett Hedlund, Amanda Seyfried, and Cara Delevingne.

The 13-year-old Aussie takes Us Weekly on a magical journey.

Us: Tell Us about the crazy audition process!

Levi Miller: I started out in Australia just doing the normal audition and then I got a call back, which was pretty cool. Then they asked me if I would like to come to L.A. That was mind-blowing! I had never been to America before. They called me up again for another audition in England. Three weeks later, I got the call that I got the part and that was insane.

Us: Do you remember where you were when you got that call?

LM: I was eating dinner. I actually had to take the food out of my mouth and run to the phone. My sisters were in the back screaming. I was like, “Oh my gosh! Yes, yes yes!”

Us:  The set you shot on was massive! Is it how you imagined Neverland?

LM: Yes, it is. It was surreal! It was very beautiful, especially the Native Village. That was my favorite. They had a trampoline in the middle — it was gigantic! There were all these different colors and all these different people walking around. It was amazing!

Us: What was it like working alongside Hugh Jackman?

LM: He’s such a lovely guy. It was cool to hang out with him. He was very into it, which I enjoyed. Once we got into it, it’s like we were actually those characters.

Us:  Was it scary seeing him dressed as pirate Black Beard?

LM: Yes! [Laughs]

Us: There are great sword fights in the film. Tell Us about stunt training!

LM: I did it gradually. I think about an hour a day, every two days. I did a bit of fighting with boxing gloves. Sword fighting was pretty cool [laughs]. Of course, they used a fake sword in training, but then they actually brought out real swords.

Us: Was it nerve-wracking flying for the first time?

LM: Yeah, there was a lot of training for that. I hopped into the harness and they put me on wires. Then, they taught me how to swerve while I was flying and how to position myself correctly. It was a mix of fun and difficulty. I never thought I would be able to fly!

Us: Peter Pan’s motto is, “Never grow up.” Do you agree with that?

LM: I definitely want to grow intelligently, but I do want to stay a kid forever!
