Lucy Lawless shot down rumors of a Xena: Warrior Princess reboot

Not so fast. Warrior princesses across the universe were teased with rumors of an upcoming Xena: Warrior Princess reboot, but Lucy Lawless herself has quickly quieted the speculation.

The chatter began on Monday, July 20, when The Hollywood Reporter released exclusive details on an upcoming Xena: Warrior Princess project from NBC and NBCUniversal International. The trade mag reported that a drama reboot was in the works from Sam Raimi and Rob Tapert with Lawless involved, and was expected to hit airwaves in 2016.

Lawless, who famously played the fierce fighter in the ’90s cult classic series, caught wind of the speculation and took to Twitter on Monday evening to set the record straight.

“Sorry, friends!” the actress, 47, began. “News of a #Xena reboot is just a rumor. I’d love it to happen one day but it’s still in the wishful thinking stage.”

While Lawless may not be breaking out her Chakram anytime soon, she did reunite with multiple Xena alums for her latest project. The New Zealand native appears in Starz’s Ash vs. Evil Dead, which is led by Xena‘s Raimi and also features actor Bruce Campbell, who played Autolycus on Xena: Warrior Princess

Lawless’ former costar Jennifer Sky, who played Xena‘s Amarice, also acknowledged the talk on Twitter on Monday. Sky, 38, shared various links to articles about the reboot, adding, “The day has finally come.” She then responded to a Twitter user who said the plans were just a rumor, writing, “The way rumors become reality is through community support. The ‘rumor’ is trending.”
