Too far! Matt Lauer appeared on The Ellen DeGeneres Show on Thursday, Feb. 26, but told the comedian that he had yet to decide if they were back on speaking terms after she pulled a wild prank on the Today show.
Earlier this month, Ellen DeGeneres had her team edit footage of Lauer and Al Roker from the Today show. As Lauer conducted an interview about the big-screen adaptation of Fifty Shades of Grey and Roker read the weather, they were shown in doctored S&M getups of leather, chains, and handcuffs.
"I've never been so popular with certain fringe groups in our society," Lauer, 57, spilled to DeGeneres, also 57. "No, I’ve made a lot, a lot of new friends. Thank you very much. So to the people like @RoughAndReady and @IveBeenAVeryBadGirl... I just want to say thank you very much for your kind tweets."
While the footage of Lauer and Roker, 60, in the scandalous outfits was completely fabricated, Lauer told DeGeneres that many people thought it was real. A driver recently asked the Today personality why he agreed to strip down for DeGeneres' laughs, only to have Lauer explain that he wasn't actually wearing the bondage clothing.
"I think the problem is, and we’ve talked about this on the show in the past, I've done some stupid things on Halloween, so I think people think I probably would dress like that," Lauer said. "But you can’t believe how many people tweeted me and said, 'You're supposed to be a journalist. How can you dress in leather, especially S&M?'"
While he laughed about the prank on DeGeneres' show, Lauer promised to get revenge on the funnywoman. He added that he was just waiting for the right moment. "I don’t want to rush it though," Lauer said. "I didn't want to do something half-baked. So I'm waiting for something. I'm waiting for you to do an interview like that. And then we’re gonna send our guys just to town on it."
