Well, that was...unexpected. Three months after her twerk fest with Robin Thicke at the 2013 MTV Video Music Awards, and just weeks after lighting up a joint at the MTV Europe Music Awards, Miley Cyrus stunned awards show audiences once again with a surreal, out-of-this-world rendition of "Wrecking Ball" at the 2013 American Music Awards, featuring a giant hologram of a lip-synching cat floating in space. Watch the performance here.

Taking the stage at L.A.'s Nokia Theatre on Sunday, Nov. 24, for the final performance of the night, Cyrus cut a dramatic figure in high-cut, high-waisted briefs and a tight, midriff-baring crop top -- both covered in pictures of cats. Another (much larger) cat covered the screen behind her, its mouth mimicking the words to Cyrus' hit song as stars and planets swirled around its huge head.

At one point during her performance, the 21-year-old "We Can't Stop" singer appeared to get emotional. The cat behind her followed suit, shedding a few cartoonishly giant tears from its big black eyes.

Cyrus has spoken before about her love of cat videos. She even brought her favorite YouTube clip of a cat in a box to the Ellen DeGeneres Show in 2012.

"I watch way too many of those videos," she told the comedian of her not-so-secret obsession. "That's why I love having so many dogs. I'm never bored. I can watch them play forever. I'm never bored."
