Mindy Kaling: My Book Isn't Salacious, But It's Still Funny!
"I never feel any pressure to be funny," Mindy Kaling said when she visited Us Weekly's New York City offices Monday.
And yet, thanks to her hilarious role as Kelly Kapoor on The Office -- not to mention her laugh-out-loud tweets -- Kaling has become one of today's top comediennes. But unlike some of her peers, the 32-year-old author of Is Everyone Hanging Out Without Me? (And Other Concerns) doesn't believe in oversharing for the sake of comedy.
"There's a trend right now for female comedians [where they think] the quickest way to get a laugh is by doing something incredibly intimate or really personal," Kaling told Us. "I'm less interested in it because I don't have any experience, really, with anything too salacious."
"Fortunately or unfortunately, I don't have this long list of lovers or humiliating sex experiences or weird drug incidents or addictions that I write about," she laughed.
If Kaling is asked to write a second book, she jokingly said she may have a few "tawdry one-night-stands" because she'll "need more material."
The Massachusetts native added that her life outside The Office is relatively low-key, which allows her to still be starstruck on occasion.
"If I saw Angelina Jolie at the supermarket I would die," she laughed. "But no one I know has ever seen her, so for me, she's the rarest of all exotic creatures."
Kaling's new book, Is Everyone Hanging Out Without Me? (And Other Concerns), is available now.
