Get ready for some of that "dirty pop," 'N Sync fans! Sources confirm to Us Weekly that, as of press time on Friday, Aug. 23, the boy band's talked-about reunion at the MTV Video Music Awards is indeed happening. On Sunday, Aug. 25, Justin Timberlake will be joined onstage by his former bandmates JC Chasez, Lance Bass, Joey Fatone, and Chris Kirkpatrick for a short set featuring some of the group's greatest hits, Us can exclusively reveal.
"They will reenact some of their greatest videos in a medley," one source says, singling out the smash hit "Bye Bye Bye," from their 2000 album No Strings Attached. "Then Justin will sing his new song 'Take Back the Night' and get his [Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award]."
Another source notes that the group is still finalizing the setlist. Rehearsals are under way, though; all five guys convened in New York City on Aug. 23 to go over the performance, an insider tells Us.
Timberlake and his bandmates last performed together on television in 2003, during a Grammy Awards tribute to the Bee Gees. Two years later, in 2005, they released a Greatest Hits album. Since then, however, the "Pusha Love Girl" singer has been busy with his solo music career and roles in movies including Friends With Benefits and Trouble With the Curve. In March of this year, he released his third record, The 20/20 Experience.
Speaking earlier this week about the possibility of a reunion at the VMAs, Bass — now the host of his own SiriusXM radio show, "Dirty Pop With Lance Bass" — played coy. "You never know," he said on his show, though he attributed the rumors to the fact that he, Fatone, and Kirkpatrick were spotted at Timberlake's concert recently.
"It's amazing to see the reaction out there on Twitter and social media…[and] how many people are supporting 'N Sync," he added. "It's so nice to see, because when we ended things [over] 10 years ago, there was no social media, there was no Twitter [fan base]. It's so cute to see how many people are supporting [us]."
The MTV Video Music Awards air live on Sunday, Aug. 25, at 9 p.m.
