New Year's Eve Tops Worst Box Office Weekend in Three Years

Well, at least you can't blame any star in particular for this one.
New Year's Eve -- the ensemble romantic comedy starring dozens of A-listers including Ashton Kutcher, Halle Berry, Katherine Heigl, Sarah Jessica Parker, Jessica Biel, Zac Efron, Lea Michele and many others -- "won" the box office weekend with a dismal $13.7 million gross.

Variety reports that, overall, it was worst weekend at the domestic box office in three years.
While New Year's Eve (a themed sequel of sorts to 2010's far more successful Valentine's Day, which opened with a huge $56 million) fell below expectations, Jonah Hill's comedy The Sitter, at number two, earned $10 million in its first weekend, as roughly projected earlier this week.

Ticket sales were down 6 percent last weekend, and 20 percent down from the same time last year, when Angelina Jolie and Johnny Depp's film The Tourist opened to a disappointing $16.5 million.
Landing in third place was Breaking Dawn Part 1 in its third week out -- with an overall gross now just below $260 million.

The Muppets ($7.1 million) and Arthur Christmas ($6.6 million) rounded out the top five.

12I guess it will rather be loved as DVD to watch at home with family and friends and popcorn.
They aren't going to open this weak movie against Cruise and Ghost Protoccol. They could not compete. Saw the movie, its kind of insipid and almost irritating due to the simple dialog. The Sitter is much better, just can't get used to Jonah Hill being thin.
it actually look kind of cute. I am surprised that it did so poorly. And Nancy Stephens- that is true a lot of the time. I like SJP and I love Gary Marshal. Hopefully it does better next week.
well.... if it got a BAD write-up it's probably a GOOD movie... anyone else notice that the WORST movies get GREAT write ups .... and vice-versa??btw: it looks cute to me,I want to see it
its cuz Kutch the do*che is in it!!!!
it is funny how many big stars canot make it happen
I didn't even know it opened this weekend! Why in the world would they open it now??? How stupid. Why not nearer to Christmas or, as Paige said it...New Year's???

people still go to movies?
Should've saved it for another week or two. Like maybe the week of New Year's?
It was obvious the movie was going to bomb. I said that back when promotion first started...
I've seen Breaking Dawn part one but that's about it...I'm not a big movie theatre person. If I'm going to watch a movie, I'll do it from the comfort of my own living room :)...New Year's Even looked like a good movie so I'll probably go and see that.
