Does this show have the right stuff? Donnie Wahlberg and Nick Lachey are teaming with Entourage creator Doug Ellin on a CBS sitcom about the members of a boy band who reunite 20 years after the group's heyday, according to Variety.
The project, titled Encore, is executive-produced by The Odd Couple's Eric and Kim Tannenbaum, with Ellin writing the script, Variety reports. The series is said to be in early stages of development.
The milieu is certainly one that's near and dear to both Lachey and Wahlberg's hearts. Lachey, 43, was a member of 98 Degrees in the late '90s and early 2000s before segueing to a solo career.
His TV appearances include hosting the competition series The Sing-Off and playing himself on two episodes of One Tree Hill.
Wahlberg, 47 — who currently costars on CBS' Blue Bloods and appears on his family's A&E reality series, Wahlburgers — is a founding member of seminal boy band New Kids on the Block. The group's breakout hits from its 1980s peak include "You Got It (The Right Stuff)" and "I'll Be Loving You (Forever)," and the guys have continued to record and tour.
If Encore gets picked up, this won't be the first project to poke fun at the boy band phenomenon. The music craze was spoofed by an MTV movie and series in the early 2000s that focused on the fake group 2gether. Meanwhile, Andy Samberg starred in this summer's film Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping as a singer who rose to prominence in a boy band–type group before making a name for himself on his own.
