Her real true love? The Originals’ Hayley Marshall may be married to Jackson (Nathan Parsons), but that doesn’t mean a happily ever after is certain. Phoebe Tonkin, who plays the vampire-werewolf hybrid, recently teased Hayley’s relationship with Elijah Mikaelson (Daniel Gillies), on The Originals‘ upcoming episode, “Beautiful Mistake,” which airs on Thursday, Nov. 12.
“I think she’s avoiding being alone with Elijah because I think she knows that deep down that chemistry is undeniable,” Tonkin, 26, tells Us Weekly. “But I really don’t think that she wants to ever cheat or not be loyal to her husband. I think she’s just trying to be very careful.”
Hayley’s relationship with Elijah’s brother Klaus (Joseph Morgan), however, is anything but romantic. Tonkin notes that Hayley is furious at him, and it’s, well, a “tricky and complicated” relationship.
“I wish that there were more scenes with Hayley and Klaus, because they have this very strange relationship,” the actress tells Us. “They’re both trying to co-parent Hope. It’s a very interesting, volatile dynamic.”
Klaus may be vicious, but Hayley is just as feisty. In “Beautiful Mistake,” she and Marcel (Charles Michael Davis) go up against a potential enemy.
“This week’s episode has Hayley and Marcel kind of teaming up, which I always love when that happens because Hayley and Marcel have a very rich history,” Tonkin explains. “Whenever we get to do scenes together it’s [an] interesting dynamic.”
Check out the rest of Tonkin’s Q&A below:
US WEEKLY: What’s your favorite part about playing Hayley?
PHOEBE TONKIN: Her priorities are the health and happiness of her kid and also maintaining a bit of a healthy marriage. Her objectives on the show aren’t as big and supernatural as a lot of the other characters.
US: What was it like hearing that your real-life best friend, Claire Holt, was returning as Rebecca?
PT: Even when she left, we always knew that Rebecca wasn’t being killed. It’s good when she comes back.
US: What’s your favorite thing about your friendship?
PT: Claire, Daniel, Joseph, Charles, Leah [Pipes] — all of us are such good buddies that I think we’ll all be in shock when we go on another job.
US: What’s something fun you’ve done off set together?
PT: There was one really fun day this summer that we got three little boats, like pontoon boats, and there were probably like 24 of us or something — [and] the Vampire Diaries cast . . . [We] just spent this whole day barbecuing and swimming and playing games.”
US: Do you have any inside jokes on set?
PT: Daniel likes to lock me out of my trailer a lot! He’ll lock it so I have to track down someone to unlock it.
US: What are three items fans could find in your trailer?
PT: Candles, kombucha [tea] in my fridge, and probably rice crackers.
US: What would you want Hayley’s endgame to be?
PT: I think that Hayley would love to just be living a very simple and normal life out in a kind of bayou with her kid and away from all the Mikaelson drama.
The Originals airs on Thursdays at 9 p.m. ET on The CW.
