Spencer Hastings is finally confiding in her friends. In the Feb. 26 episode of Pretty Little Liars, the recently single teen (played by Troian Bellisario) reveals that her ex-boyfriend Toby Cavanaugh (Keegan Allen) has been plotting against them as part of the villainous A-Team.
“So what are we saying, that what Ali wrote in Emily’s notebook was true?” Aria Montgomery (Lucy Hale) asks Spencer. “That Toby secretly hated us ever since Ali threw that firecracker in his garage? And the whole time that you two were together he was just pretending?”
Emily Fields (Shay Mitchell) doesn’t want to believe that Toby could betray their friendship. “We all know how much Toby loves you,” she argues. “This can’t be true. There has to be more to the story!”
A weary but angry Spencer fire back, telling Emily, “If he loved me, he would not have let me sit outside of his loft balling my eyes out for hours. He wouldn’t have taken everything out of A’s lair when he knew that I had the key. He wouldn’t be trying to hurt me — us!”
Spencer then breaks down into tears, with Aria offering her apologies. Emily, however, still can’t imagine Toby would ever intentionally harm the girls. “Mona must have something over him,” she theorizes. “The Toby I know would never do anything to hurt any of us.”
Looking Emily directly in the eye, Spencer laughs. “You need to stop thinking about Toby as the person that you thought you knew and start looking at him for who he really is. . . The quicker you wrap your mind around this, the better!”
