This once-venerable hit is suffering from a serious case of been-there-itis. Pill-popping doc Gregory House (Hugh Laurie) grouches and manipulates again as he tends to a young man with Alzheimer's symptoms. The tale itself is absorbing, and guest star Melanie Lynskey (Two and a Half Men) gives a heartfelt performance as the guy's torn wife.

House's trademark mix of sarcastic barbs and medical jargon has grown tiresome, however, and newer cast additions, such as Charlyne Yi, are a bit bland. As for the medic's selfish behavior, viewers will nod when a coworker vents, "He's always self-destructive." No wonder Laurie looks ready to take his cane and hobble out the door. (Fox, 8 p.m.)
