IN STORES TUESDAY 1/5

Katharine McPhee may have chopped her long brown locks into a striking blonde bob, but it didn't give her sound any extra oomph. The American Idol fifth-season runner-up -- whose self-titled debut CD came out in 2007 -- once again offers a bland, forgettable collection of sweet, soft numbers that lack distinct personality. Bingo! You hit the nail on the head.

I don't know about this whole American Idol thing. The reason could be because AI is a music phenomenon that empowered fans to vote and be active. This is probably why fans of artists coming off the show are more vocal about their opinions. Just connecting the dots here. As for the review. I said the review was scarce. I understand there are many constraints that you must work around, but you add little tidbits about the artists' hair, their married lives, and other "fun facts" that don't have anything to do with reviewing the music. I have read many other reviews that criticize this album and are also short, but at least they explained what the problems were, and even listed a few songs that were good/bad. I don't blame you. You are probably held to pleasing the US magazine readers, who don't really care about the music anyway.

The question remains the same: Why are there so many comments only on releases by American Idol finalists but none on actually amazing albums by other artists? Note there are no comments on my reviews of Ke$ha, Mary J. Blige, Rihanna, John Mayer or Lady Gaga. The same merry band of Idol fanatics are the only commentators. Also: you try writing a review in less than 50 words. These reviews are the exact reviews taken from the magazine where that is all the space there is available for reviews. I wish I could write 1,000 words or more to really dissect an album and make my case but there's simply no space.

I don't care that you don't like the album and I do. Everyone has their own tastes. This is music; not everyone is going to agree. I was just upset that you wrote such a scarce review for a full length album. After reading your other reviews, I see that you don't really write much for anything. I thought you were being unfair by writing a bit of fluff for Kat, but everyone seems to get the same treatment, good or bad. So, no worries.

Well, I hope your goal was met! Write a snarky review, get alot of hits to your site! Remember, if it were not for American Idol, alot of you so-called "music reviewers" wouldn't have a job! Good luck when American Idol goes off the air--you may have to actually listen and review music.

You write for US Weekly. Katharine was made famous by appearing on American Idol. We won't your current venue against you if you don't hold Katharine's 4 year old venue against her. At least she can say she has moved on from AI while you are still stuck with this stinking low brow piece of sh1t publication. LOL at the "music reviewer for US Weekly". Do you actually tell people that when you are asked what you do or do you leave out the "US Weekly" part???

  • January 01, 2010 - 3:30pm Simon

I could just say that US Weekly is a steaming pile of sh1t but all I have to do is let it speak for itself: THE TOP 5 Today's five most viewed Us pages...Don't miss them! 1 EXCLUSIVE: Taylor Swift, Taylor Lautner Split! 2 Find Out About the New Bachelor Scandal! 3 PIC: Beaming Angelina Jolie Greets Brad Pitt, Daughters On Set! 4 PIC: Brad Pitt Takes Boys to Dave & Buster's! 5 Hailey Glassman Says Jon Gosselin Attacked Her in Jealous Rage

No arguments here: Just a healthy debate over something we all seem to be passionate about: music. There should be more of that. Much better than apathy.

    I like the album

Ian, no matter your opinion on how well or well NOT the album does, doesn't make it mediocre. You may be a "reviewer" or whatever, but frankly I don't think your opinions matter much! A true reviewer will say his piece; when there is an option for comments, let them flow -- the reviewer won't argue with his commentators; you've said your piece, now we will say ours :)

Ian, no big deal. Understand where you are coming from. I hope the fact that she came from a cheesy manunfactered show didnt affect your review, but as long as you gave it a fair shot, whatever you think is OK.

  • January 01, 2010 - 12:13pm The Real Anon

Ian i agree with your recent comment, no ex american idol has had a top hit the show produces losers who cant sing and then after 2 weeks of being in the "limelight" they dissaper....

  • January 01, 2010 - 11:38am Ian Drew

Paul: That makes no sense. How does defending the review have anything to do with the review not being well-written? The truth is every time I review a mediocre release by any ex-American Idol finalist there are a million comments from Idol fans defending it with their claws out. None of these records ever goes anywhere, ever hits the top 10, ever makes it to any best of lists and they also coincidentally get bad reviews from every other reviewer. Objectively, its just a mediocre album. It is. Not terrible, just mediocre. She can sing - nobody said she couldn't - but the album itself is so formulaic and derivative I guarantee you it won't be a hit. Notice nobody comments on the reviews of actually great reviews, but whenever you say anything even the slightest bit negative about a former Idol it elicits all of these defensive comments.

  • January 01, 2010 - 5:06am Paul

When you have to comment on your own review to justify what you said, you probably didn't do a good job writing the review in the first place.

  • December 31, 2009 - 4:33pm Intruder

Sorry, Ian, but her voice is WAY more than just 'decent'. Something tells me you need to go back and listen another few times without holding whatever grudge you have.

Wow!! Delete my comment like a baby...can dish it but can't take it! So pathetic!

Guys relax! Some reviewers have agendas and are hateful. You cant please everybody. If you like the album and its on your iPod-thats all the matters. Besides who gives a dam was US Weekly thinks of an album.

  • December 31, 2009 - 4:06pm J

I think this album is fantastic, I think she looks fantastic, and I think she sounds fantastic, don't really care about the reviewers opinion whatsoever. Go Kat!!
