Us Rating: **

When their best friends die in a car crash, control freak Holly (Katherine Heigl) and laid-back Eric (Josh Duhamel) inherit their baby and then, implausibly, must move into their home. The uneven rom-com is heavier than it should be, swinging between being too sour and too sweet as Holly and Eric repel and then -- natch -- attract each other while they adapt to parenting. Duhamel comes off better, demonstrating easy comic timing, but Life remains far-fetched -- with too few laughs. (Warner Home Video, $29)
