In this fantastical sci-fi thriller, a soldier (Jake Gyllenhaal) goes back in time to determine why a Chicago train exploded. Further complicating matters: He falls for the chatty passenger (Michelle Monaghan) sitting across from him on the ride. Though the convoluted story grows increasingly far-fetched toward the end, Gyllenhaal shines. The actor, who plays sensitive guys so well on screen, proves once again that he can handle a muscular action role too. (Summit Entertainment, $27)
