Us Rating: ****

Longtime lesbian couple Jules (Julianne Moore) and Nic (Annette Bening) get thrown when their teen kids' sperm-donor father, hipster restaurateur Paul (Mark Ruffalo), enters their lives. Bening, whose control-freak doctor character feels refreshingly real, should certainly get an Oscar nomination. Moore, who is also a contender for a nod, plays it loose and sexy, and the rumpled Ruffalo delights in each one of his scenes. It's a tart, laugh-out-loud, generous portrait of the challenges of American family life -- gay or straight. (Focus Features, $30)
