Us Rating: ***1/2

The charming period drama -- which earned the best picture Oscar! -- follows the United Kingdom's King George VI (worthy best actor winner Colin Firth) as he struggles to get over his stuttering problem with the help of a tart speech therapist (Geoffrey Rush). The opening scene, in which George (the father of the current Queen Elizabeth II) attempts to address a crowd, is heartbreaking as the embarrassed royal gets stuck on the consonants. The supporting cast sparkles in this intelligent film -- especially Helena Bonham Carter as the king's no-nonsense wife. (The Weinstein Company, $30)
