Funnyman Russell Brand masters Shakespeare as a colorful shipwrecked sailor in Julie Taymor's gender-switching adaptation of the tragicomedy. A majestic, brilliantly restrained Helen Mirren plays Prospera, the dethroned ruler avenging herself and her daughter (Felicity Jones) against her treacherous brother (Chris Cooper) and his coconspirator, King Alonso (David Strathairn). Mirren sets the bar here, and the cast rises to it.
