Hilary Swank earnestly assumes the role of Betty Anne Waters -- who became a lawyer to free her wrongfully imprisoned brother (Sam Rockwell) -- in this middling true story. Rockwell outshines the material, however, as the rough New Englander. He's particularly good in a scene in which he goes from devoted father to bar brawler in the course of a single pop song.
