Jude Law and Robert Downey, Jr.'s Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows triumphed over Cruise's Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol this weekend in theaters, earning an estimated $40 million in box office receipts.

Opening in the top spot, Guy Richie's adventure flick far exceeded the earnings of Cruise's M:I, which took in $13 million in its debut, limited release weekend. Grossing $23.5 million, Fox's animated Alvin and the Chipmunks: Chipwrecked snuck in between the two flicks for a second place finish.

The ensemble holiday-themed New Year's Eve took a nosedive this weekend, finishing in fourth place with a $7.4 million take, just seven days after "winning" the worst weekend box office in three years, with $13.7 million in receipts.

Rounding out top 5 weekend flicks was Jonah Hill's Fox comedy The Sitter, which netted $4.4 million.
