Ryan Gosling is out to dispatch some evildoing androids in Blade Runner 2049. The 36-year-old appears in the first trailer released Monday, December 19, for the sequel to 1982’s Blade Runner.
The trailer opens, though, with a voiceover from Harrison Ford, the star of the original film. In the Ridley Scott sci-fi classic, he was the titular Blade Runner, Rick Deckard, who was tasked with hunting down androids who went rogue. Slowly creeping into the frame here, Ford appears in the 2049 trailer with his gun aimed squarely at Gosling’s character, Officer K.
“I had your job once. I was good at it,” Ford says.
“Things were simpler then,” our hero flatly responds.
What other clues do we get in the trailer? Not many, besides a fuzzy view of Gosling walking through a city street, flanked by neon signage, which mimics the look of the original film.
This is the second time in recent years that Ford, 74, has revisited one of his beloved characters. Last year’s Star Wars: The Force Awakens featured the Chicagoan in his iconic role of Han Solo. But those who’ve seen that film can tell you that he likely will not return for the next Star Wars installment, due to hit theaters December 15, 2017.
Ford will also reprise his role as adventurer Indiana Jones in a fifth movie for the Steven Spielberg–directed series, set for release in 2019, which Disney announced in March 2016.
Gosling — who was unable to do much of the press tour for La La Land due to filming Blade Runner 2049 in Budapest — was nominated for a Golden Globe for his performance in that movie musical, directed by Damien Chazelle.
Denis Villeneuve — who helmed the critically acclaimed sci-fi film Arrival, starring Amy Adams — directs the Blade Runner sequel, produced by Alcon Entertainment and released by Warner Bros. on October 5, 2017. Watch the trailer above!
