Anne Hathaway is Les Miserables.
Universal Pictures released the first official trailer Wednesday of Tom Hooper's big screen adaptation.
Set in 19th-century France, the video features a skinny, miserable Hathaway singing the well-known tune "I Dreamed a Dream" from the musical. The 29-year-old actress plays Fantine, a prostitute who is suffering from a terminal case of tuberculosis. She is forced to sell her hair in order to provide for her daughter, Cosette (Amanda Seyfried).
While the first trailer mainly focuses on Hathaway's struggles, the film also stars Hugh Jackman, Russell Crowe, Eddie Redmayne, Samantha Barks, Helena Bonham Carter and Sacha Baron Cohen.
The "dream lives" in theaters Dec. 14.
