Dr. Alex Karev (Justin Chambers) was just one of the doctors gunned down in the nail-biting, two-hour season finale of Grey's Anatomy Thursday night.
A crazed gunman -- who was grieving the loss of his wife, who was taken off life support on an earlier episode -- stormed Seattle Grace determined to kill Dr. Derek Shepherd (Patrick Dempsey).

Within the first seven minutes, the gunman shot Karev, but Dr. Lexie Grey (Chyler Leigh) found him and saved his life.
Mandy Moore guest-starred as a patient who ended up assisting Dr. Miranda Bailey (Chandra Wilson) in trying to save another surgeon who was gunned down. The gunman then returned, and found Bailey's hiding spot. He pointed a gun at her head and asked if she's a surgeon. She was spared after she lied and said she's a nurse.

Shepherd was then shot by the gunman, and it was up to Dr. Cristina Yang (Sandra Oh), the only remaining heart surgeon in the hospital, to save his life. The gunman discovered Yang operating on Dr. McDreamy and put a gun to her head, threatening to kill her if she doesn't stop.
Yang tricked the gunman into thinking she let Shepherd die on the table as Shepherd's wife, Dr. Meredith Grey (Ellen Pompeo), arrived and begged the gunman to shoot her instead.
In the end, Shepherd survived, and the gunman shot himself -- but viewers learn Meredith miscarried the baby she just discovered she was pregnant with.
