’Suicide Squad’ Fans Livid Over Negative Rotten Tomatoes Rating, Start Petition to Shut Down Site

Suicide Squad fans mean business. A DC Comic faithful named Abdullah Coldwater created a petition on Tuesday, August 2, to shut down Rotten Tomatoes because of the movie’s poor Tomatometer rating.

The site, which aggregates reviews of movies and TV shows to calculate an approval rating and deem the flick fresh or rotten, assigned the upcoming fantasy/crime blockbuster an unfortunate 33 percent. (For comparison, Rotten Tomatoes awarded Finding Dory a 94 percent and Seth Rogen’s upcoming Sausage Party a 100 percent.)

The petition has already been signed by almost 15,000 fans.

“First: Thank you very much for reaching more than 5,000 supporters,” petition creator Coldwater wrote in an update on Wednesday, August 3. “Second A Clarification: A petition definitely won’t shut down the site. The aim of the petition is to deliver a message to the critics that there is a lot of people [who] disagree with their reviews. … It’s just a way to express our anger.”

Those in the comments section of the petition have also been trying to wrap their heads around the negative reviews.

“Warner Bros the studio behind the DC franchise owns 30% of Rotten Tomatoes. Disney the studio behind Marvel owns 0%. So explain to me why Warner Bros bashes their own movies which makes them loose $ while rigging the system to make their competition get good reviews and more $,” a Facebook user pointed out, to which a fan replied: “Guess theirs 30% gave positive review.”

Fans are failing to notice, however, that Rotten Tomatoes isn’t actually reviewing the film, just collecting reviews from other sources.

The highly anticipated film — which stars Will Smith, Jared Leto and Margot Robbie — hits theaters on Friday, August 5.
