Surf’s up! It was a fun ride for winners, presenters, and performers at the 2014 Teen Choice Awards, like Ultimate Choice Award recipient Selena Gomez, The Fault in Our Stars‘ winning duo Shailene Woodley and Ansel Elgort, and Hunger Games villain Donald Sutherland. Here’s a look at some of the most memorable moments from the awards show held Sunday, Aug. 10, in L.A.

1. Selena Gomez Accepts Ultimate Choice Award, Thanks Mom and Fans for Making Her “Better”

She went and got it! Selena Gomez accepted the Ultimate Choice Award onstage, after a video montage of her past performances—in film, TV, and music—was played for the screaming crowd. “I cannot thank you guys enough, amidst all this stuff that we deal with,” she told her fans as she accepted the surfboard. “I’m not trying to preach or any of that, it’s just that you guys make me better,” she continued, while noting that her followers remind her of what’s most important: “That’s giving and loving and caring about each other,” she said.

Gomez concluded her speech by thanking the greatest influence in her life: her mother. “I want to thank my mom so much,” the former Disney star said. “She’s the greatest human being in the world. And she’s strong.”

Former recipients of the Ultimate Choice Award have included stars like Justin Timberlake, Reese Witherspoon, Britney Spears, and Sarah Michelle Gellar.

2. Fault in Our Stars‘ Shailene Woodley and Ansel Elgort Win Big

Dynamic duo, indeed! Fan favorites Shailene Woodley and Ansel Elgort won big at Sunday’s awards show, picking up surfboards for several prizes including Choice Lip-Lock and Choice Movie: Drama for Fault in Our Stars. Elgort picked up awards for Breakout Movie Star, Choice Movie Actor in a Drama, while Woodley individually took home the surfboard for Choice Movie Actress in Adventure for her role in the action flick Divergent.

“I don’t surf or anything,” Elgort told the crowd. “So I guess I’m gonna put this on my wall.”

Woodley, meanwhile, thanked the crowd for voting her in as their Choice Movie Actress. “I feel pretty honored to be accepting this award on behalf of women,” she said. “The truest form of bravery and of courage is to be ourselves.”

3. Jennifer Lopez Reunites With Maid in Manhattan Onscreen Son Tyler Posey

Aww, they grow up so fast! Jennifer Lopez and Tyler Posey reunited onstage Sunday, nearly 12 years after the Teen Wolf actor starred as Lopez’s young son in the 2002 rom-com Maid in Manhattan. “I know we haven’t seen each other since Maid in Manhattan, which was forever ago,” Posey said to Lopez, before breaking down into dance.

As Posey walked off, the “First Love” singer marveled over the 22-year-old star’s grown physique. “It’s crazy…he’s so big!” she said. “Oh my god.”

4. Donald Sutherland Accepts Award for Best Villain in Hunger Games

Say it ain’t Snow! Legendary actor Donald Sutherland showed up at the Teen Choice Awards to accept his surfboard for Choice Villain. The crowd reacted to his appearance by slowly holding up the “District 12” sign—a hand symbol which means they admire and respect the person onstage.

“My wife agrees with you,” he said of being voted Best Villain for his portrayal as the treacherous President Snow in the Hunger Games movies. “I, on the other hand, do not. I am very nice, sweet-tempered, and generous. Too generous, in fact, that I have brought you souvenirs from Panem. They’re berries.” While tossing the objects into the crowd, he added with a sinister tone, “I wouldn’t eat them if I were you.”
