On Monday, May 18, each artist sang one cover and one song with their coach and, for the first time in The Voice’s history, they were also allowed to sing original songs.

Linsey sang her soulful ballad about a recent breakup, “Change My Mind,” and the single quickly reached iTunes’ Top 10. The soul artist impressed the coaches with her songwriting skills.

Davis wowed with his song “The Workingman’s Hymn.” The folk song had a deeper social message about the American Dream and helping one’s neighbor. It was also an ode to his hometown of Detroit. “This isn’t just you writing a song,” coach Levine said. “This is you writing a fantastic song.”

In addition to being this season's frontrunner, Fredericks also had the priviledge of having idol Ray LaMontagne write the song “Please” for him. The day after he performed it the single was no. 2 on the iTunes charts (only losing to Taylor Swift’s “Bad Blood”).

But Hawthorne got an extra special treat when her coach Williams penned her the original song “Bright Fire.” The famed producer has previously cowritten monster hits like “Happy,” “Blurred Lines,” “Hollaback Girl,” “I’m a Slave 4 U,” and Beyonce’s “Work It Out.” The religious anthem earned praise from all of the coaches, including Levine, who admitted he was jealous that Hawthorne got her own Pharrell tune.
