It was a tense 90 minutes on Sunday, November 13, as the monstrous, jovial baddie Negan (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) showed up to wreak havoc behind Alexandria’s walls on The Walking Dead. The villain’s first visit to his latest community conquest was a terrifying glimpse into what the future holds for our survivors: defeat, despair, humiliation, and the constant threat of death at the hands of a bat-wielding maniac. Here were the biggest moments from this episode, titled “Service.”
There’s a New Sheriff in Town
The bulk of this episode was spent on Negan’s first visit to Alexandria, a pillaging of epic proportions that left everyone inside the community’s walls reeling at how utterly screwed they were. Of all the things that Negan took — including every last gun (BAD) and all the mattresses (RUDE) — the most vital thing he robbed the Alexandrians of was their hope and dignity. The only itty-bitty triumph managed by the survivors — thanks to some quick thinking and quicker gravedigging on the part of Father Gabriel (Seth Gilliam) — was to convince Negan that Maggie (Lauren Cohan) had died. That’s good news for everyone, but especially Mags, since Negan apparently has a thing for his victims’ widows. Yuck.
WTF, Spencer?
Meanwhile, Negan isn’t Alexandria’s only concern; there’s also the small matter of Spencer (Austin Nichols), who it turned out has been hoarding food, liquor and guns in a hidey-hole in his house. This is not good citizenship, Spencer.
SPENCER! WTF?!
And neither is this: After Negan’s departure, Spencer decided to guilt-trip Rick (Andrew Lincoln) over the disastrous massacre of Negan’s men that put them in the monster’s sights, and the resulting deaths of Glenn and Abraham. This hardly seemed fair of Spencer, who, while not wrong per se, was kinda ignoring the part where Negan is an ice-cold psychopath and was always going to descend on Alexandria eventually. Rick, for his part, responded by telling Spencer that another outburst like that would earn him a broken jaw.
Baby Daddy Drama
Remember Shane, Rick’s former partner and ex–best friend from way back at the show’s beginning? Rick does — and as he revealed to Michonne (Danai Gurira) this week, he knows that Shane is Judith’s biological father. Rick is evidently not bothered by this, so we won’t be either, but it was still weird to hear him say it out loud.
Rosita’s Revenge
And finally, where Rick seems resolved to just live the rest of his life with Negan’s boot on his throat, Rosita (Christian Serratos) isn’t giving up so easily. Now in possession of the only gun in Alexandria (which she plucked from a zombified Savior outside the walls), the last moment in this episode saw her knocking on Eugene’s (Josh McDermitt) door with a demand: “Make me a bullet,” she said. Will Rosita be the one who topples Negan’s regime?
