Penelope Cruz plays a frustrated actress -- with nods to Marilyn Monroe's unbridled sexiness and Audrey Hepburn's stylish allure — in this twisty Pedro Almodovar melodrama about a blind screenwriter (Lluis Homar) trying to put together the pieces of his tragic romantic past. In Spanish with English subtitles, the film moves seamlessly back and forth in time thanks to Almoldovar's suave direction and passionate love for his muse, Cruz. Still, while the filmmaker's fans will embrace his latest, the two-hours-plus movie is less accessible than his recent hits.
