Us Weekend Guide: Tobey Maguire, Jake Gyllenhaal Fight Over Natalie Portman

The Oscar race is officially on with Friday's release of the new George Clooney comedy, Up in the Air -- but perhaps not with Brothers.

A movie film fans should skip this weekend? The Tobey Maguire-Natalie Portman drama Brothers, which Adams says is a total bust. Maguire stars as an soldier who goes to Afghanistan just as his brother Tommy (Jake Gyllenhaal) gets paroled. Soon, his wife Grace (Natalie Portman) gets the news her hubby was shot dead, and takes comfort in Tommy's presence. The flick's a bust, due to Portman's miscasting and Maguire's overacting.

Check out Hollywood's other leading ladies steaming up theaters this season.

An ideal bittersweet tale about life during recession, Up in the Air was touted as an Academy Awards front-runner by the National Board of Review Thursday. Us' film critic Thelma Adams also sings the film's praises, calling Clooney a "shoo-in" for a best actor Oscar nod. Costarring Vera Farmiga as a frequent flier who hooks up with the leading man, Up in the Air earns a perfect four stars from Us' Adams.

Revisit all the women Clooney has romanced over the years.

If you're looking to get into the holiday spirit early, skip the Christmas shopping lines at the mall and stay in for Carrie Underwood's All-Star Holiday Special, airing Dec. 7 on Fox. Christina Applegate, David Cook and even Dolly Parton join the country queen for a two-hour treat featuring skits and musical performances.

It was one of the most relevant films I've seen in a long time. It made the reality of the psychological horrors of war very real in a no nonsense way! This film by all means should be a sleeper hit with Oscar nods for Tobey Maguire, Jake Gyllanhaal and Natalie Portman who by the way was stunningly sexy and beautiful while delivering a convincing performance! Sam Shepard was Oscar caliber great as well. I totally loved this film and I haven't said about a movie in quite awhile!

Way of about "Brothers" here. This will be a huge oscar contender. It's a film with powerful performances from incredibly talented actors, and most of all, it is of social relevance. I found it interesting that the film was released right around the announced troop increase in Afghanistan.

Did the critic even see the movie? Anyone who saw the movie would know that the news that natalie portman gets was not that Tobey Maguire was shot. So maybe check your facts and see the movie before you critique a movie? The helicopter crashed. It was an amazing movie with such talented people.

I thought brothers was a great movie. Who are these smucks that think we care what they say about a movie. I didn't think there was overacting and I thought Natalie was perfect for the role. BOOO critics! And Clooney is so OVERRATED!!!

leave it to US to say that the movie is about jake and tobey simply fighting over Natalie. it is about so much more than that. sometimes media makes me so disgusted.
