The Oscar race is officially on with Friday's release of the new George Clooney comedy, Up in the Air — but perhaps not with Brothers.
A movie film fans should skip this weekend? The Tobey Maguire–Natalie Portman drama Brothers, which Adams says is a total bust. Maguire stars as an soldier who goes to Afghanistan just as his brother Tommy (Jake Gyllenhaal) gets paroled. Soon, his wife Grace (Natalie Portman) gets the news her hubby was shot dead, and takes comfort in Tommy's presence. The flick's a bust, due to Portman's miscasting and Maguire's overacting.
An ideal bittersweet tale about life during recession, Up in the Air was touted as an Academy Awards front-runner by the National Board of Review Thursday. Us' film critic Thelma Adams also sings the film's praises, calling Clooney a "shoo-in" for a best actor Oscar nod. Costarring Vera Farmiga as a frequent flier who hooks up with the leading man, Up in the Air earns a perfect four stars from Us' Adams.
If you're looking to get into the holiday spirit early, skip the Christmas shopping lines at the mall and stay in for Carrie Underwood's All-Star Holiday Special, airing Dec. 7 on Fox. Christina Applegate, David Cook and even Dolly Parton join the country queen for a two-hour treat featuring skits and musical performances.
