‘Heathers’ Might Be Getting a TV Reboot: Details

Get ready to get catty. A TV reboot for the 1989 cult classic Heathers might be on the way. The Hollywood Reporter reports that TV Land has ordered a script for a possible pilot.

Heathers starred Winona Ryder (Veronica) and Christian Slater (J.D.) as high school students who plot to kill a clique of obnoxious peers who are all named Heather. The twisted lovebirds, however, hope to carry out their plan by making the murders look like suicides.

The Michael Lehmann–directed flick also featured Shannen Doherty, Lisanne Falk, Kim Walker, Penelope Milford, Jeremy Applegate, Patrick Labyorteaux, Glenn Shadix and Lance Fenton.

TV Land’s new project is just as dark — with a twist. The “outcasts” are now “school royalty,” and the Heathers are much different. According to THR, Heather McNamara is now a black lesbian, Heather Duke is a male who is gender-queer and Heather Chandler has the body of the unpopular fictional Heathers character Martha Dumptruck.

Heathers was also made into a stage production, Heathers: The Musical in 2014. Slater, 46, attended a showing and talked about his experience during a Today show interview that April.

“It was weird to see that show, a musical version. But it was adorable,” he said. “What was weird was just seeing another guy up there in the black jacket, playing that part. There were parts of me that wanted to run up on the stage.”

He added: “I snuck in and then showed up at the end. I thought that I would just come in under the radar.”
