Woody Allen to Create His First TV Show For Amazon: Details!

Woody Allen has signed on to create a new TV show for Amazon Studios.

Referencing California in the 1977 classic Annie Hall, Diane Keaton (as Annie) says, “It’s so clean out here,” to which Woody Allen’s Alvy Singer replies, “That’s because they don’t throw their garbage away, they turn it into television shows.” Now, after almost seven decades in show business, the famed director, writer, and actor is getting into the TV business himself.

On Tuesday, Jan. 13, Amazon Studios announced that the four-time Oscar winner, 79, has signed on to write and direct his first ever television series. The Amazon Prime show will be available on Instant Video in America, the UK, and Germany.

The half-hour long series is currently known as the Untitled Woody Allen Project

“Woody Allen is a visionary creator who has made some of the greatest films of all-time, and it’s an honor to be working with him on his first television series,” Amazon Studios Vice President Roy Price said in a statement. “From Annie Hall to Blue Jasmine, Woody has been at the creative forefront of American cinema and we couldn’t be more excited to premiere his first TV series exclusively on Prime Instant Video next year.”

The legendary filmmaker jokingly added, “I don’t know how I got into this. I have no ideas, and I’m not sure where to begin. My guess is that Roy Price will regret this.”

It’s been a big year already for Amazon, with the new content producer bringing in two major Golden Globes for its groundbreaking series Transparent on Jan. 11.
