10 Times ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ Season 12 Made Us Flip Out!
Surprise! Meredith threw an ill-fated dinner party, and Callie (Sara Ramirez) was excited to bring her new girlfriend. But when the door opened, Mer locked eyes with Penny (Samantha Sloyan), who the surgical chief considers to be responsible for the death of Derek (Patrick Dempsey). Needless to say, this was not a great party.
Putting the fun in family dysfunction! When Riggs (Martin Henderson) arrived at Grey Sloan, it was abundantly clear how much Owen (Kevin McKidd) hated him. But an added twist came when Owen’s mom showed up with her boyfriend, and Meredith soon discovered how messed up the Owen-Riggs history really is. It all came back to Owen’s sister — you know, the one we never knew existed? Right.
Final answer? After having put up with Alex (Justin Chambers) ditching her over and over again for his “person” Meredith, Jo (Camilla Luddington) finally told him she’s done. What did he do in response? Propose to her. No biggie. We didn’t find out her final answer until much later in the season — all the way in episode 23 — when she tearfully told Alex: no. Talk about a verdict that's not worth the wait.
As if the poor woman hadn’t been through enough! Meredith was mercilessly beaten and thrown around, almost to the point of no return, by her patient Lou after he suffered a seizure. During her recovery, viewers experienced the world from Meredith’s injured perspective: silence, panic and a whole lot of pain.
After countless flashbacks to the glory days for April (Sarah Drew) and Jackson (Jesse Williams), viewers finally faced the inevitable: divorce papers. When April finished signing the fateful documents and got a visit from Arizona (Jessica Capshaw), the most surprising twist of all was revealed: April was pregnant. As of that very morning. As in, she found out just hours before she signed the papers. And no, Jackson had no idea. Ugh.
Although Meredith had comfortably settled into widowhood, giving in to the fact that she would never find another McDreamy (true!), it was only fair that she got a little romantic play this season. After meeting the absurdly hunky Will Thorpe (Scott Elrod), who asked her out over and over, he eventually drove her home from work, and the two shared their first semi-date, eating fries and chatting in the car. Fast food and a hot doctor — what's not to like? (Sadly, things didn't end too well for their romance.)
When Miranda (Chandra Wilson) called a code pink that shut down the entire hospital, Ben (Jason George) and Andrew (Giacomo Gianniotti) were stuck in a hallway with a very high-risk pregnant woman. The situation was so dire that Ben performed an emergency C-section in the hallway. Unfortunately, the mother and baby both died, and the code pink was over before the surgical resident began the procedure, leading to his six-month suspension. Bad call, Ben.
Callie wasn't afraid to fight dirty for custody of Sofia during a brutal and intense hearing, leading Arizona to say she had lives to save and that the child would be fine with either mom. Classic. And who was ultimately to blame for the battle that ended with Arizona earning custody? Well, Penny’s grant was the reason Callie wanted to move to New York with her daughter. Oops.
Put a ring on it! After an on-and-off, up-and-down relationship, Amelia (Caterina Scorsone) and Owen seemed to be on a good path. During surgery, they had a hypothetical conversation about getting married, getting a place and eventually raising kids. When Owen took Amelia to his brand-new house (yes, he got rid of the trailer — finally!), she proposed to him to make sure their relationship was real. Aww!
In the final minutes of the episode, Meredith and Riggs did the previously unthinkable! In the Grey Sloan parking lot, following a long day of saving lives and ignoring the obvious sexual tension between them, it happened: They started furiously making out. It was a welcome return to the Meredith we hadn’t seen since her Derek days.
