Brad Renfro's friend and on-off girlfriend Samantha Pearson spoke to the actor just 12 hours before he was found dead.
"At 11:45 p.m., he was drunk. The last thing I said to him was, 'Please be careful,'" she tells Us Weekly in the latest issue, on newsstands now.
"He seemed happy, laughing, joking," she told Us.
The morning after, on January 15, the 25-year-old was found dead in his apartment, the victim of a "possible overdose," according to the L.A. County coroner, following a night of heavy drinking mixed with anti-anxiety medication.
In a cruel twist, the actor – best-known for starring in 1994's thriller The Client – seemed to have finally turned the corner on his recent drug problems (a past abuser of heroin, cocaine, marijuana and alcohol, he
had a stint in rehab and legal woes).
Renfro's roommates let him live with them rent-free to help him stay off drugs and a week before his death he visited his family in Knoxville, Tennessee. "In other years, we had to babysit him," his cousin Jesse Hasek told Us. "This time, he was like, 'I've got it figured out.' It was the happiest I've seen him."
In Knoxville, Renfro glowed about his 4-year-old son, Yamato, who lives in Japan full-time with his mom. (Yamato was "unplanned," Hasek told Us, and his mother is "a friend he had over there.")
"He asked me, 'Do you think I should marry her? I like the feeling of family,'" Hasek recalled. "It crushed Brad that his kid lived on the other side of the world. He was saying, 'I should bring them over permanently and be a part of their lives.'"
Renfro, seen here giving the middle finger in the last photo of the actor, got a tattoo that read "F--k All" inked across his back two days before his death.

Brad's death hurts me deep down to my soul. I think it's because we were the same age and I grew up seeing him on tv, and he was always my favorite actor, I just felt that he was so different, so unique than all of those other actors. He had a great soul, a true artist, and he will be missed dearly.
I'm deeply hurt by the little attention the media gave his death, the snubs, all of it is so disrespectful.
He will live on in our memories and our thoughts. He will always come to life on our screens. I'm glad we all had the chance to be exposed to this person. It was a blessing.

I think that he was a beautiful and so very talented actor. I know so many GOOD people who went down this path. Rich, poor, famous or not. I will always remember him in the movie The Cure. That is absolutely one of the saddest movies of all time. He was a good actor and will be missed. To anyone who comes on here and bad mouths a person who is passed regardless of the reason, I hope that one day someone does you the favor and trashes you when your gone. But even then with all of your jealously of someone who you wish you were will not bring your sorry bleep back.

Just so you know, most of what is in that article is false. Things said in interviews were completely altered and things that were specifically asked to be excluded (like his son's name) were included anyway. Oh, and Brad did not get that tattoo two days before his death, he got it before Christmas and it was already healed when he was in Knoxville for the holidays. This is a trash magazine. Don't be stupid sheep by believing everything you read, and don't make assumptions about someone you didn't know.
US used to be a decent magazine before it went weekly, now it's lies and utter crap. How disappointing. Buy the National Enquirer, it's cheaper and more entertaining.

Many reports say that rich people are less happier than common people. It's true. And I think money is important to support our lives, but it's not everything. It cannot determine whether we are happy or not. I recently found a wonderful big guy in PlusMeet..COM where big people have fun together, and both of us don't have much money. But we really feel very happy when we are together.

Not a single one of you (including me) knew Brad or what his true issue was...and whatever "it" was, was HIS business. Passing judgement is a cowardly act. God forbid you ever find yourself in the same position. If you do find yourself in the same position, you deserve it for your actions above. You obviously knew nothing about Brad or you would have nothing negative to say.He had some demons throughout his life and had his fair share of problems. Everyone has had problems and everyone has made mistakes. Who are any of you to pass judgement? Just because his mistakes were in the headlines it's okay? He wasn't a loser-far from it. He was the most caring person I've ever came into contact with. He would give you the shirt off his back and the shoes off his feet. If you were hungry he would make you something to eat or buy you something. If you were down he would sing to you.He would help you out in any way he could--friend or stranger. He took care of everyone around him, even when it appeared he sometimes couldn't take care of himself.
He loved Yamato and took very good care of him. He was his little treasure.
Do not believe everything you read. A lot of people who sell stories to magazines are just looking to make some quick cash, unfortuanately, even family members. Additionally, just because Brad had drug problems does not mean he was a bad person. He struggled sometimes, but there was so much more to him than that--and the other side- the one who was caring and would make friends every single place he went--that's the Brad that should be remembered.
Brad had many problems yes, but to speak ill of him after he's gone is just bad karma. We have all had our trials and tribulations in life and I'm sure having fame at a young age makes it harder to deal with as it's all in front of the public. try and show a little compassion.
