Holding daughter Matilda, Michelle Williams arrived in Perth, Australia, Wednesday for Heath Ledger’s funeral.
Sources say it is her love for their 2-year-old daughter that is providing the strength as she mourns the late actor’s untimely death.
"Michelle was always really vulnerable, so this has shaken her quite a bit," a friend of Williams tells Us Weekly in its latest issue, on newsstands now. "She's mourning and trying to figure out what to do next.”
Matilda, though, “is too young” to know the heartbreaking reason why her father isn’t around anymore.
“Michelle and the family are showering Matilda with love right now to cushion it so she isn’t really aware,” a source close the family tells Us Weekly in the newest issue.
The source adds: “Michelle basically told Matilda, ‘Daddy went away.’ Matilda still doesn’t grasp it.”
Matilda, who was often seen around New York City on Ledger’s shoulders before his shocking January 22 death, “looks just like her father,” a friend close to Williams told Us.
Her mother agrees.
“All that I can cling to is his presence inside her that reveals itself every day,” Williams, 27, said in a statement Friday. “His family and I watch Matilda as she whispers to trees, hugs animals and takes steps two at a time, and we know that he is with us still.”

6:41am I am sure you are probably some wannabe actor who was jealous of Heath's amazing talent. I hope that the positive comments made on this site outweigh the ignorant rants made by people like you.
Michelle hopped into the Indian ocean, and made a refreshing bleep with the ashen cremains of her druggie ex-impregnator dead hack actor. Then, she let loose a torrent of filthy, mucous-filled fluid from her VADGEHOLE directly into the mouths of the assembled mourners. THe Ledger family, filming the event were moved to tears thinking of the $$ they will make on pay-per-view!

wow!! instead of focusing on the family and also Heath... people focus on the comments of others! However, i agree to those that focused on him and the family. It is hard to tell a little child that someone dear has pasted away. Some cope with it differently than others. It's a blessing for her to have her daughter and see Heath through her. May he rest in peace, without tabloids and everyone else bothering him! May the family get through this rough time. I wish them the best.
This comment is for that pathetic waste of human skin Rotting Aussie Overdose. Your comment was nothing but a pathetic way of getting peoples attention you should be ashamed of your self i hope that you rot in hell.
Hey I just wanted to say that I will miss watching new movies without Heath Ledger in them. I will also miss seeing on icantandiwont.com the pictures of his daughter on his shoulders. I will also be thinking of little Matilda and Ms. Williams from time to time, praying that they are doing okay and pray for their strength that they desire... and deserve...

How's she coping? Just fine, now that the dead loser is out of her hair, Michelle and Matilda can now W H O R E for the next drug-addict loser to pump them full of AIDS--that's Australian Idiot Death Semen--enjoy,

I feel so sad for the pain Heath's family and friends must be going through, and as well it's intensified because of the way it is so public. When I heard about Heath Ledger's death I cried more than for anyone I know personally, and I don't really know why. I really liked the movies he made, but I would not call myself his biggest fan. I guess it was the fact that Matilda will have virtually no memory of her daddy who she loved. But the main thing is, his family still have eachother to support through this tragic time. I am so sorry for them. I am sure Matilda will grow up to be a beautiful young woman, just as she is beautiful now, and just as her mother and father grew up. The world really is a lesser place without Heath, I think.
Heath seemed like a really wonderful daddy. I'm sure Michelle and Matilda will miss him so much. He passed his loving spirit on to his little girl. It is so sad that he had to pass on so young. We cannot know all the mysteries of this life.

all yall makin these childish remarks need to shut the f up and move on with your dull boring lives leave the family alone to grieve you idiots
I can't believe that people like you exist!! Don't you have a life !! No wonder the Internet has such a bad name.
You don't know the first thing about Heath Ledger or Michelle, but any one with half a brain could see that they were in love.
In case you're wondering, I came on this by accident while reading papers online !!
7:04 you are an idiot, damn shame YOU don't have any pills...world doesn't need people like you.
That was a horrible thing to say 7:04pm! This young child just lost her father! Whatever the curcumstances were behind his death, she has nothing to do with that. Michelle Williams will now have to raise a child that does not have a father. People break up and continue with their lives, but that does not mean they do not still care about the people they broke up with. I am sure she is heartbroken for her and here daughter. You should be a little more sympathetic for a loss.
"Matilda, your baby-daddy-spermdonor Heath died due to the lack of a working knowledge of pharmacokinetics and drug-drug interactions. Too bad he never played a doctor like me. Also, I will make it up to you by sleeping around and spreading my Hot Pocket for Ryan Gosling, the cute Apple Mac-dude and anyone else who wants to get on top of me. Now, lets go on a wicked shopping spree at Hermes to drown our grief in private. Hugs, your mamma, Michelle."
I hope that the media along with us common folks will give his family and Michelle space and time to heal from this horrible time. We all need to respect them, It really is NONE of our business what is being said to his young daughter. NO ONE knows how they will react if something should happen to thier childs father. I think she is handling this very well, my thoughts and prayers are with them and so should yours.
"Whispering to trees" and "hugging animals" indicates a love for ALL God's living beings. It is meant to indicate a profound level of sensitivity and humanity which Matilda seems to have inherited from her father.
In fact, loving and respecting nature quite a bit more ASAP might be in all of our best interests.
Per world renowned Child Psychologist Erik Ericson, children cannot grasp abstract thought - including the concept of death - until they are at least, seven years old. It is simply not possible for them to understand the concept. Telling two year old Matilda Rose that "Daddy went away" - and that he still loves her VERY much - is the best they can do, for now.
God Bless and prayers for little Matilda Rose Ledger, and her Daddy.
It's just so sad. I can't imagine being in the position of having to try and explain to a child that young where their Daddy went. And little Matilda looks sooooo much like Heath. :(
I would hate to be in Michelle's position, being criticized for every little word. She was trying to offer a few comforting words in memory of her child's father. Show a little more respect.
Amen Maddy. Michelle Williams, in a very difficult time took the time to release a few words about her daughter. She certainly did not OWE any of us that. She shared some beautiful thoughts which certainly cannot even cover how she really feels. I feel guilty for even reading some or the stories, it just contributes to the press frenzy surrounding them. I feel blessed to know that Matilda is such a sweet child and wish her only the best in life.
Thank you Maddy! People just love to discuss NONSENSE. I thought Michelle William's statement was very touching and endearing. God bless her and litle Matilda.
Can everyone just drop the tree issue. How silly the arguement has become. A child has lost her father. Period, end of story. It's a great tragedy. Everyone should stop the petty arguement and just remember that fact. May God Bless little Matilda and her family.
for the record, there is a stage in children's development where they talk out loud to themselves. the more a child talks his/her way through tasks that are difficult, the easier it will be for the child to do a task the following time. and children that speak to objects that can't converse back with them tend to be very articulate and literate later in life. what's the difference between talking to a tree and writing in a diary? besides, she's two. how many grown people do the things they did as two year olds? and most only children talk to inanimate objects, or invent imaginary friends because they don't have peers. if you think about it, talking to a tree could be considered the same as talking to an infant. neither one can answer. finally, how sad is it that this entire forum is people arguing whether or not a child they've never met is "normal" or not. who cares, obviously matilda is loved, cherished and protected, so ya'll can relax.
Talking to trees..so what..what child has not pretended to talk to imaginary people,to their dolls or teddy bear.. Anonymous... you need to get a brain..or don't say such stupid remarks at all...All children use their imagination when little... It is not a crime or some kind of behavioral disorder..Get a grip you Anonymous ...
It does seem like everyone is losing site of the issue. A child has lost her father. Regardless of if the poor thing talks to trees, rocks, the ceiling, the sky, that one tragic fact remains. God Bless her and Michelle in this horrible, difficult time. Hopefully they can find some peace and privacy.
Seems like all of you are "spazzing" out!
i think the "talking to tree's" was more of a figure of speech... or hell maybe she talks to tree's. doesn't matter. She's a beautiful little girl and i just hope(and i think she will) that Michelle will raise her knowing that her father was a good man and that he loved her. Thats all you CAN do when something like this happens.
I don't see any reason to spazz out because someone questions why would she be talking to trees. If 11:06 is anything like me, they haven't been around that many children.
Wow! Making comment about a child speaking to a tree... your point? It would be very abnormal if a child didn't express him/herself. I can't imagine your children don't speak aloud to themselves.
Matilda is a sweet little girl who's normal. May Michelle be able to provide her the guidance she needs without a father.
