Four Feathers Director: I Spoke to Heath the Night Before He Died

Shekhar Kapur, who directed Heath Ledger in the 2002 adventure Four Feathers, says "last spoke to him the night before he died.

"I had just arrived in New York last night, he said he could not see me that night but really wanted to meet me the next day," Kapur writes on his Web site.

"He made me promise that I would call him in the morning and wake him up."

Police confirm to Usmagazine.com that they confiscated prescribed sleeping aid Ambien in the apartment where Ledger's body was found Tuesday.

In November, Ledger had told The New York Times that he often took the prescribed sleeping aid, Ambien, to help him fall asleep.

"Last week I probably slept an average of two hours a night," he said. "I couldn't stop thinking. My body was exhausted and my mind was still going."

He went on to say that taking one pill had no effect on him; he'd have to take two to fall asleep. But then, he said, he would awake an hour later with his "mind still racing."

Signing off, Kapur writes:

"Farewell Heath. I always knew you had an ancient soul. I always said you had a wisdom beyond your years. And somehow I always knew that your spirit was too restless. Goodbye, my brother."

I took Ambien for about 4 months and stopped 2 weeks ago. Something told me that this medicine was not healthy. You actually have to detox yourself from it and it stops working gradually over time. Therefore if you want sleep, you have to keep increasing it's dosage. Your body becomes tolerant to it just like any other narcotic. However when you have chronic insomnia and you are only sleeping for a few hours a night, you'll do anything to get some rest. This is such a shame, the public should be warned of the dangers of Ambien.

It's tough, we're just all trying to come to terms w/it. Heath was really likeable, humble, a wonderful father. It's a sad story. It does sometimes feel like you know someone when you see their movies. I've even seen him naked for goodness sake. It's a type of relationship, fans, actors. He was super talented. We were looking forward to seeing him as the Joker. It's a sad story and it's still grief even if we didn't know him personally.
