Harry Potter's Midnight Magic!
Friday July 20, 2007
![]() Jon Furniss/WireImage.com Harry Potter is working his final wizardry. The much-anticipated seventh -- and final -- novel in the Potter series, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, hit shelves at midnight Saturday and fans worldwide stormed bookstores to buy the historic page-turner. Its British author, J.K. Rowling, read excerpts of the final installment to over 1,000 young fans at 12:01 a.m. Saturday inside a London museum. Eager readers had started lining up Thursday at the Union Square Barnes and Noble in Manhattan. "I got here yesterday at 5:30 p.m.," Joey Tartaglia-Malter, 18, the first person to buy the book at the store, told Usmagazine.com. "I'm going home to read the first chapter, and then I'll crash!" The NYC bookseller hosted a "Midnight Magic" party in which fans, many in Potter costumery, waved magic wands and listened to Grammy-Award winning narrator Jim Dale read passages of the novel. "We have a couple of thousand more people here from the last Harry Potter release," store employee Steve Markowitz told Us. As the clock counted down the seconds, the roar of the crowd grew, and at midnight they erupted into cheers. Boxes marked "Do Not Open Until July 21" were unsealed and passed up to a stage. Police had to control unruly fans who were pushing their way through the entrance. They didn't have anything to worry about. "We have over 10,000 copies, so everyone will get one," Markowitz said. "And we'll get more tomorrow." Join Us on Facebook and Twitter for even more up to the minute celebrity news and photos! |
