Hayden Panettiere Parents: Dad's Arrest "Big Misunderstanding"

 PacificCoastNews.com Hayden Panettiere's parents are downplaying dad Alan's arrest for spousal abuse. "It was all a big misunderstanding," he and his wife Lesley tell Extra's Mario Lopez. Although a police report claims Alan struck Lesley three times (leaving a bruise), the couple insist “nothing actually happened. “[We] love each other very much and want everyone to know that the matter was completely blown out of proportion,” they tell Extra. Extra reports that Hayden found out about her dad’s arrest when he called her from jail. Booked on a charge of felony domestic violence, Alan, 49, was arrested at 3:15 a.m. at the family's West Hollywood home. They were spotted arguing at a Hollywood charity benefit earlier in the night. "I was with him when he was released, and he was cooperative," Steve Whitmore, Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department spokesman, tells Usmagazine.com. If it has come down to hitting you can bet verbable and emotional abuse have been going on for years. Peace begins inside the home. Love is not about control.

In his mind the arrest was a big misunderstanding. His fist in her face 3 times is hard to misunderstand. I have zero respect for him or the wife for accepting this kind of behavior and the message it sends to other abuse victims.

It's too late to deny anything happened - I'm sure the husband forced her to change her story... very typical.... she's probably comfortable with her life too and the money - it's very scary to leave a bad sitution and start over - BUT IT CAN BE DONE! Low self esteem here... that's why she has show-biz kids! It's all about being noticed. And, from the original story it sounded like she was flirting with someone and it pissed off her husband - that's no excuse to slap her, but obviously the sign of a bad - bad marriage.

BOTH of her parents owe it to battered women everywhere to come clean about what exactly happened and to not cover it up if it is actual abuse. It definitely has to be explained, because I don't see how a bruised face can be 'misunderstood' but I suppose they should have the chance to explain

The fact that they are denying anything happened isn't surprising to me. First they probably don't want this story out and effecting Hayden or Jansen. Second, if this is something that has been ongoing, most women in this situation deny anything is wrong until it gets completely out of control. Unfortuantely some women stay until it's too late and they are killed. Regardless, if the police say Lesley had a bruised cheek, something happened. Even if this is the only time anything like this has ever happened, he needs to get help and so does she. I wonder who called the cops? Could it have been their son? I am curious to hear the police tape. No matter what happens, I really hope the family the best and hope that Alan can get his act together. Whatever happens with his marriage, he has to remember that he will always be a father to Hayden and Jansen and that he needs to set a good example.
