Hayden Panettiere is a real-life hero — to dolphin lovers anyway.
The actress, 18, was scolded and shoved with a long pole by fishermen as she and six other animal rights activists tried to interfere in a dolphin hunt in the southwestern Japanese town of Taiji Tuesday, the Associated Press reports.
No one was injured.
The fishermen insisted hunting dolphins is a Japanese custom and Panettiere and co. had no business interfering.
Try telling that to the actress.
"This baby stuck its head out and kind of looked as us," Panettiere said after coming ashore. "The thought that the baby is no longer with us is very difficult."

This is a great story and an important one. Cheers to Hayden for stepping up! I was getting tired of seeing Hollywood youth getting arrested, driving drunk and flashing cameras. There is another site where the topic of animal rights is being covered that may be interesting to readers here. Author Peter Heller who writes for Men's Journal, Outside Magazine among others has written a book call The Whale Warriors. This books is of profound importance to all and just a great read! You can find out more about it at Mr. Heller's blog site www.peterhellerbooks.com
Seems saw her profile before on a age gap dating site called agemingle.com
Way to go hayden. you have guts. she knows she would get critism and such but she did it any way!
Save the animals
I find it arrogant for an American to protest and interfere with another country's business. Let's put it this way, How would we feel if people of the Hindu faith from India came here and planted hidden camaras in a beef slaughter house, put it all over the press while whining about what nice animals they are and that we shouldn't kill them for food. Take care of business at home Hayden.
Death, no matter the manner by which it happens, is simply a fact of life. I eat meat, all kinds of meat, and it is because I view the nutritional vitamins and minerals that my body will digest from such meats. I also consider myself an omnivore, and most importantly a predator.
If Hayden wishes to make an issue about animal rights then she may, that's her right to do so. And it is also the right of those Japanese fisherman to maim, stab, murder, skin, gut, and consume those dolphins. And finally it is the right of the dolphins to exist, and to die if they are not intelligent enough, or have not evolved, to defend themselves against predators.
I am a vegetarian and I support her belief but not her method. If you are a meat eater and hunter in Japan and your ancestors have been doing that for hundreds of years then it would be fully normal and natural to do that.
The truth is that if you want to stop your favorite animals from being eaten you need to stop eating all meat and fish and stop buying it.Some think meat is not fish.It is meat.
I see some of you put her down for not defending other species.I think that defending any species is positive.I don't even care if it is a publicity stunt due to what I just said.
"I wonder what people would say if a group of japanese protestors came to america and rallied around a bunch of cows."
It would be the exact same feeling. The meat eating americans would think they were crazy and needed to get a life.
So what I want is all the meat eaters in the world to to make a choice.
#1.Say it is right to eat every form of meat. Dogs,Cats,Parrots,Dolphins and most important humans.
#2.Say it is right to not eat any living thing with a brain. To kill any living thing cause you think it tastes good is wrong in my opinion.
You should stop using the word "Jap". Most of all, it is very racist, and if you think killing dolphins is bad, you should think about what you are doing to support your opinion. It is a culture in Japan with history that goes back to 400 years. The U.S. has been killing whales for so long, using them for oils and such. I don't think we should ruin their culture just because we think it's not right.
The only people who have a right to support Hayden would be pure Vegetarians... Otherwise you're just hypocritical.
Fish, Chicken, Pork, Cows ... they're being slaughtered by the millions and no looks twice.
Dolphins are animal and they have been a source of food for along time in Japan - so why all the fuss?
I was there,....this photo was taken 2 days before the slaughter...this photo was taken as we came in from a 40minute peaceful paddle out surfer ceremony, to pay tribute to the 26,000 dolphins and small whales that are killed every year throughout Japan, usually to be eaten as 'whale' meat...
I can assure you Hayden feels very strongly on this topic. I can also assure you that there are only 26 fishermen in this are who are killing the dolphins, it does not represent all in Japan.
Furthermore, the fishermen make more money from selling off live dolphins to aquariums and swim with the dolphin programs, however these dolphins are captured and selected in the same drives...the stress and the panic often killing the dolphins in the process...it is a deep issue, that needs to be educated further in Japan.
If people would like to help solve this problem, the first step is to research the issue thoroughly by yourself. i firmly believe that before you start accusing people and telling them what to do, you should know the facts and suggest reasonable alternatives...
and people like Hayden show brave courage to come and risk their lives in the name of humanity...
there are many problems in the world, but if we all focussed on the things that we feel the most passionate about, maybe we really could make a difference, and create a better place...
You just don't get it, most are not critisizing her for doing it, they are critisizing her for doing it BECAUSE she did it for publicity, all to improve her image, for HER gain. Like they mentioned earlier..... where is she when those one billion cows are slaughtered in the U.S.? Oh that's right, people would think she was a loon for doing that - that wouldn't help her image/career the way this dolphin campaign will. This happens to be another culture's way of life. We may not agree with it, but who are we to say THEY are wrong? Keep your nose in your own backyard and quit staging events for your damn career.
Along the lines of 10:22, I was reading today about how Hilary Swank cut off her hair and gave it to a cause similar to Locks of Love. Rather than appreciate that, some woman was talking about how her daughter does that all the time and you don't see Oprah honoring her daughter. Please. It's wonderful she does that, but Oprah doesn't know about your daughter. Enough of this trying to outdo everyone else in regards to charity. Appreciate Hilary for what she did. Appreciate Hayden for trying to protect the dolphins. Don't bash someone because their good deed wasn't good ENOUGH in your eyes.
I love animals, one activist act at a time. Humans are important. But she happened to be there, and she happened to want to help the dolphins. Absolutely nothing wrong with that. The only thing worse than not helping at all is criticizing others for their particular cause and saying how it doesn't matter because it should have been something better. Ridiculous.
Most canned tuna is "dolphin-safe" now.
I agree with what 11:48 AM Anonymous has to say. We(as americans)are always jumping in where were are not needed. Why suddenly are we compelled to jump on some b/s like saving dolphins...in the US they are used for tuna..yeah Tuna...who hasn't had a tuna sandwhich? Anyone ask if its all tuna in that can? NO! If everyone is really hopped to make change, help Darfur, what's going on in Rwanda. Why are we still waging full scale attacks for oil. Dolphins? Gimme a break! Save the humans!
1:28 PM LHenri Says:
Um, how does one say, "That's so completely wrong I can't even begin to tell you?!?!?!?!?!?!?!" in Japanese?!?!?!?!
Repeat after me: DOLPHINS ARE NOT MEANT TO BE EATEN AS MEAT!
Those fishermen are wrong to kill dolphins for human consumption!
I'm glad Hayden Panettiere had protested them doing such a horrible thing.
umm....ok. i personally agree about the dolphin and human consumption thing, but keep one thing in mind....if every vegetarian on this planet decided to "do something about" the fact that others do eat meat, we would have friggin WWIII goin on. everyone might believe something different and that DOES NOT automatically make what they believe wrong just cuz you yourself don't believe in it! i hate venison but you don't see me chasing after every hunter out there, screaming at them.
I found a website that lists this link to e-mail the Prime Minister of Japan. I'm not sure where it goes, but I felt better after doing my part and sending a note encouraging the slaughtering of dolphins to end!! Everyone please send a note! kantei.go.jp/foreign/forms/comment.html
go hayden. I admire such a young and brave girl. Poor dolphins, shame on the japs. shame, shame, shame. I don't eat meat or fish so I CAN talk about it. The picture of the sea as blood is what got to me the worst. Looks like the end of days in armageddon when the water is prophesized to turn to blood.
Do you know HOW MUCH BLOOD that took to turn that sea cove red? GEEZ.
For those all for the slaughter or don't condemn it, why don't you take your family and kids vacationing in that cove, you can swim in the blood. What if on every beach humans slaughtered animals on it and let all the blood run into the ocean? Our environment and water would be poisoned. Complacency will (and is) leading to our own destruction, and I am sick of it. But there's Nothing I can do to stop this as one single person, except refuse to eat meat. Well, and condemn and look down on those people that condone this kind of barbarism and think it's funny.
Question to ponder: How many times have you seen american fisherman or ranchers or hunters corral 20 thousand or so living, breathing, feeling, scared wild animals all at once and hack them up until the earth is saturated and flows with their blood?
I watched this on CNN and it was DISGUSTING. They were mutilating these poor dolphins and they showed them in a pool of bloody water. Poor Hayden had to see this, I almost threw up from watching this.
2:35 FVCK u Jap lover
I think they should have clubbed Hayden and left the Dolphins alone.
Hey gang...can we stop using the word "Jap?" It should be "Japanese."
I think using "Jap" is almost as racist as using the "N" word...like how Dog the Bounty Hunter did...
Have you ever tried dolphin sushi? It's so good. Better then sex.
~*Wicked*~ ... love it...you totally explained the grammatical error. Obviously "2:13 PM Anonymous"
needs to repeat 2nd grade again.
I know everyone, I'm totally off the topic here.
I did go to to savejapandolphins.org
CRAZY. It is sad that I have never heard about these terrible occurences, yet I have heard about Paris Hilton going to jail and about Carrie Underwood's new boyfriend.
omg, I cannot even bear to read this story. I f hate people who have no concern for animals, let alone other mammals! I hope those fishermen all go bankrupt or will be eaten by sharks!
(My Mom used to go on these early morning swims when vacationing in Greece and a pod of dolphins would accompany her all the way. True story. Cutest thing ever. They'd nudge her legs. She says she was scared at first & praying to "poseidon", but they were totally harmless, just playing around with her).
Go Hayden! I love this girl now!
Actually Anon..when you make a plural of something you do NOT add an apostrophe. For instance-
The Japs live in Japan.
To make it a possesive word THEN you add the apostrophe. For instance-
The Jap's plane is flying over the Atlantic.
This has been 1st Grade English. I hope you learned well.
The plural for Jap would be Japs. Jap's would indicate a singular possessive and Japs' would indicate a plural possessive. Not a nice word by the way. I would've just said "Japanese."
By the way, "Anonymous at 1:48PM" the plural for jap IS jap's. Anytime you abbreviate a word and make it plural, you do use an apostrophe.
More importantly, it is NOT right to slaughter dolphins. They are one of the most intelligent creatures on earth, so they suffer more than most animals - physically and psychologically. Cows who are so overbred and have been domesticated for so long, they don't know their head from their arse.
1:27 PM *Wicked* Says:
Speaking of things being slaughtered, I wonder when we will do that to the Jews again. And when they will ban down syndrome kids from frolicking with normal kids.
Um, you're trying way too hard and you're too obvious.
PBS did a Frontline on this a couple years ago. You might be able to find a podcast of it somewhere. It's really disturbing. And entire harbor is turned red from dolphin blood. Me, I think they're too smart and cute to kill, but that's just me. I'm not a vegan so I'm not really one to talk.
