Heath Ledger Remembered at Dark Knight Premiere

Heath Ledger's family and co-stars paid tribute to the late actor at Monday night's Dark Knight premiere in New York City.

His father Kim and his wife Ines (Heath's stepmother) flew in from Australia for the event. As he left the screening, Kim gave reporters a thumbs-up.

Along with Heath's older sister Kate, Heath's mother Sally Bell and her husband also attended.

Look back at Ledger's life.

"He gives a master performance," Aaron Eckhart, who plays district attorney Harvey Dent (a.k.a. Two-Face), told Usmagazine.com. "I am honored and proud to be in this film with him."

Added co-star Maggie Gyllenhaal (who plays attorney Rachel Dawes): "He’s remarkable, he’s inspiring."

Actor Gary Oldman, who takes on the role of Lieutenant Jim Gordon, called Ledger's performance as the Joker "electric."

Co-star Michael Caine, who plays butler Alfred Pennyworth, told Us he'd be "very surprised" if Ledger didn't nab an Oscar nomination. "He’s got my vote," Caine said.

"What we wanted to do was create a villain that's iconic and terrifying, I think, but also recognizably human," director Christopher Nolan told the Associated Press.

"And I think Heath does that in a very interesting way - I think people are going to be blown away."

Christian Bale, who plays the Caped Crusader, said it was "tragic [Heath] is not here, but I am here to see his talents and celebrate it, and I hope everybody will."

The film, already sold out in some cities, is getting rave reviews from critics.

Rolling Stone's Peter Travers gave it 3.5 stars out of four, saying The Dark Knight is an "absolute stunner" and that Ledger is "mad-crazy-blazing brilliant as the Joker."

Ledger died of an accidental prescription drug overdose at age 28 in January.

Diana Lee the lip licking thing is a signature Joker trait from some of the graphic novels. By the way Jack played himself in makeup... He was not The Joker. Ledger played the part perfectly, it was like he walked right out of the comics.

I have never seen a character portrayed so uniquely as Ledgers Joker. the change from funny, zoot suit wearing, clown who happens to commit crimes, to an Anarchistic, sociopathic, Mass murdering terrorist who happens to wear clown makeup was awesome. Especially for a fan of darker action movies like myself. The way Ledger prepared his state of mind for this movie must have been incredible, because he isnt just playing a criminal. The jokers movements, Little ticks such as constantly licking his lips,as well as his maniacal facial expressions and laugh, show that there was a lot of study into the psychology of a man with a tortured past and mutilated face. Christian Bales Bruce Wayne character is completely overshadowed, although his tortured Batman persona still has some vigor too it ( Bale plays a much more interesting bad guy than handsome playboy, see "American Psycho"), and well, to be honest, the change of Harvey Dent from an incredibly brave, just man into a man who would hold a gun to a childs head was way to quick, and Unbelievable. Ledger definately saved this movie. although I think it still would have been good, it would've never been as good without the Evil joker persona. It's sad that Heath Ledger has left us, but I like to think that this movie would have been a box office smash regardless of his untimely death. R.I.P. Heath Ledger

I must tell you, I saw the movie last night, and I think Heath Ledger's performance was a problem in the movie.
His performance was way, way, way over the top. His lizard mouth was driving me crazy. He got in the way of the role.
Let's see, there are many actors who could have done better in the role. How about Edward Norton, Joaquin Phoenix or Johnny Depp? Actually, you would not have to look very far......Eric Roberts certainly could have done a better.
Christian Bale was very good. The rest were pretty much just reprising roles that had all done before!
Let me just say...."He's no Jack!"

It was a good movie a little to intense for anyone under 12 in my opinion but very well done. Ledger was as good as everyone said and I believe he stole the movie and made it is own though Aaron Eckhart was also very good.

Honestly, I wasn't a fan of Heath Ledger though it's a shame he's gone - I did enjoy his performance as the Joker more than anything else he's done. However I think his performance is way over-hyped. He was good, but not great. The best character/actor in the movie was Aaron Eckhart's Harvey Dent/Two-Face. He brought a great believability to the fall of a good man. Unfortunately his performance will be shadowed by Heath Ledger's Joker because of the over hype.

Heath will ALWAYS be REMEMBERED....He was such a dynamic, humble, sensitive soul. The talent that was taken is an unspeakable loss. But the MAN behind the talent is the hardest loss to bear. He wasn't like the "Typical Celebrity" There was something genuine and so brutaly honest in him. He was a man who was true to himself. Heath was plagued with alot of problems that he didn't talk about and he suffered from insomnia. If he had received the correct professional help he would still be with us today. New Years 2008: My Little Brother Chris Dropped Dead - a moving testimony to a brother with Asperger's Syndrome, by Zen Peace. If you know someone who is socially naive, shy and intelligent then read this book.
