Either we're somehow getting messages from 100 years ago, or America really is as backwards as the rest of us joke about it being. Other countries have racism (on whatever side you like) but you guys should get honorary doctorates in racism. 'Half-breed'!!! wow! and 'What would the world be like without whites?' also wow! On a world without whites though I'd like to point out that slave trading was done with equal vehemence and regularity in the Muslim world so another race would have been there to fill the gap in the absence of whites. White people could only be the horrific force they were thanks to the fact that they evolved in a climate which was ripe for crops and abundant in meat, this led to high competition between tribes and so more efficient weapons and more aggressive attitudes (you needed both to survive). When the land finally couldn't hold the population any more, Europeans expanded. Whites weren't the only group of people doing this though and in their absence Europe would have been filled with another race which did exactly the same thing (Arabs, Egyptians, pick a culture). So when you judge whites by the colour of their skin, just remember human nature had other races waiting in the wings to fill the gap if whites weren't about. Plus try and feel at least a bit sorry for me, I'm from Irish descent and if there were any slaves associated with my lineage they were side by side with my ancestors laying railway track. That doesn't show on my skin though so I get tarred with the same brush as those descended from slave owners/traders. Besides what difference does it make to the kind of person someone is if their great-great grandfather was a slave or a pittance-paid labourer (which the MAJORITY of white people are descended from)? Anyway aside from all of this, congratulations to Ellen and Chris, good luck to them, if the US is as racist as it sounds they're welcome over here in Europe.

Ellen Pompeo, 37, and her boyfriend of nearly three years, Chris Ivery, are engaged, Pompeo's rep confirms to Us Weekly. Ivery proposed on Friday -- which was also the actress' birthday -- with a 3.5-carat emerald-cut diamond and platinum ring by Tacori.
Pompeo plays Meredith Grey on the hit ABC medical dramedy Grey’s Anatomy. She has also starred in Old School and Moonlight Mile. Ivery, 38, is a music producer.
The couple met in an L.A. grocery store. Though Pompeo wasn't interested in a date originally, she agreed to go out with Ivery when they bumped into each other again six months later.
They discovered that they grew up 10 miles from each other outside of Boston.
"I had to go 3,000 miles away to meet a guy who practically grew up next door," Pompeo told the Boston Herald last year. "But I guess everything comes full circle."
Though the couple has not yet set a date or location for the big day, Pompeo has told Us, "My boyfriend and I travel to Italy quite often and I think that’s always the most romantic for us. We went to Bologna and he has family there and I think that’s our favorite place."

to all these negative and ignorant comments about black, white, native american, etc. Pick up a freaking book and READ!! there are a LARGE majority of African-Americans with native-american background and heritage because both cultures were degraded by past english/white cultures forcing them to co-exist in exile in many places. The past is the past and that's where it should stay - white, black, native-american, we've all loss, blacks killing blacks, suburban white kids running around with shot guns shooting up schools and churches - it's a heart breaking tragedy the state of our society and our country - if you're not trying to be a positive part of a solution for a peaceful society you are part of the PROBLEM!!!
I am so surprised that interracial dating is still a topic of much debate. I mean we live in 2007 and people still feel very deeply about those relationships. It is pretty amazing. My question is what does Chris Ivery really do? There is no information at all about what company he is a record producer for, also what artists he works with. I mean the only information out there is that he is married to Ellen Pompeo and that he used to bea drug dealer. For all we know he just has a recording studio in his house and does beats for artists that we have never heard of, and that Ellen is supporting them. It is just so weird that I cant find out anything about his music.
