It was a bit funny at times but it was at the expense of Ryan Phillippe which is really sad! Any person with common sense would see how uncomfortable it was making him and would have stopped but Leno keeped going. That's just rude. Now I know why I don't watch his show. No person, including me, wants choices that we regret brought up in our faces 10-15 years later. Come on!

Lighten up. Jay's jokes were funny - that is his job. They should be taken in jest and they do nothing to change one's view of gay people. If anything, they make such a lifestyle more mainstream and acceptable. There are much bigger and important things to be upset and sensitive about. let this one go.

Jay Leno is not funny and is obviously retarded. He looks like a moron with a freakishly huge head. which is why he is the host of this show telling jokes to retards who watch it. This was offensive? As a gay male, I found nothing wrong with Jay's comment. There is such a thing as a 'gay look'. You want to be offended by gay stereotypes? Watch some old clips of In Living Color's Men on Film. Those will still make the Church ladies pee their girdles.

I don't think he is making fun of the gay community. He seems to just be bringing up funny things to make Ryan uncomfortable. I mean, what does that commercial have to do with being gay? He's clearly kissing a girl at the end. Plus when Ryan is talking about his role as a gay teen on the soap opera, he discusses how cheesy he had to be with the camera. The whole issue is about Ryan doing cheesy roles, not being gay. Get over it!

So, according to this Witty guy, Ryan Phillipe is actually offensive as well for playing a gay character, eventhough he himself is not gay? What they couldn't find a gay teen...

Did anyone watch the opening two minutes where Phillippe talks about not Googling himself because of all the hatred and vitriol hidden behind anonymity that permeates the Internet?

For some reason that strikes me as far more pertinent a topic (not to mention apropos and ironic for this site) than whether or not a poor attempt at humor was offensive...

please... am i the only person that understands that these interviews are NOT impromtu events?

a day or two before you go on to tape, a producer calls you up and you do a phone interview. you and the producer go over "cue" words. this is to ensure that you and the host will not be stepping all over each other. these people are actors, they are suppsoed to act surprised that the host "dug up" an old clip.

the main problem i have is, RP could never act... never. all of his shock and dismay was a tad over the top. but maybe it was supposed to be. wink wink, nudge nudge.

the sad part is, there are people that think it was all real and RP had no clue it was going to happen.

Well, Whitty, for one, "gay" is not a race. Secondly, if we weren't so, um, anal about everything then "black" or "jew" wouldn't be verboten comedy subjects. People make fun of whites all the time ("white people can't dance", "old white men run America", "redneck", "trailer trash", etc) and nobody complains. Double standards.

I'd have felt uncomfortable too having been subjected to that humor on TV by Leno, but then again I wouldn't play a sodomite... on TV or at home.

Ryan wasn't uncomfortable, he was laughing, and you could even hear him say "just kidding" when he said he'd never come back. He was having fun with it, and joking about what he had to do when he was younger to get his foot into the acting door. He looked like he was embarrassed about having to play a gay part, not about being questioned about it. By The Way: Jay always tells the people what he is going to talk about beforehand, and the people often tell HIM what they want to be asked during the interview.... that way they n share their newest funny story or promote their newest book/ movie etc.

And WHAT the HELL does this even mean?? "Wow people, just because it isn't a negative comment, doesn't mean it isn't homophobic" Too many frigging double negatives in that sentence to even make sense.

Please, people! Get a sense of humor. I'm overweight, and I laugh at "chubby jokes" everyday. Jay did not say anything cruel or hateful. There's a funny side to every human condition ...
