Country music singer Toby Keith and his family have been awarded $2.8 million in damages for a 2001 collision on an Oklahoma interstate that killed Keith's father, H.K. Covel.
According to the Associated Press, a jury returned the verdict against the operators of Rodriguez Transportes of Tulsa and the Republic Western Insurance Co., finding that Covel would not have died if the company's bus had been equipped with properly working air brakes.
According to evidence presented at the wrongful-death trial, the charter bus that slammed into Covel's vehicle on I-35 was "in urgent need" of brake repairs before Covel was killed. The Rodriguezes reportedly had been advised of the brake problem before Covel's truck crossed the center divide and collided with the bus.
The verdict was returned last week. "The jury found no fault on the part of Mr. Covel in the wreck that claimed his life," the family's attorney said.
The plaintiffs awarded the damages include his wife Carolyn Covel, daughter Tonni Covel and sons Toby Keith Covel and Tracey Covel.

Jeannie Sparlin from Purcell, Oklahoma is the person who side swiped H.K.'s vehicle and pushed him into oncoming traffic. She is not rich, that is why they went after the people he collided with.

H.K. Was hit by another car and pushed into the lane of the bus. He didn't go over the line himself. Get your facts straight before you say something. They wanted H.K.'s name cleared. He was not at fault and that is what they wanted.
I guess if your parent was hit and killed and was blamed for something he didn't do you would let it go. How sad that is.
It wasn't for the money, all they wanted was to clear his dad's name.

I've been following this for the last few days, and the logic in this case seems tortured at best. How do you cross into oncoming lanes and then get to sue someone for your own death? The man, Keith's father, could have killed any number of people in the oncoming lane, besides himself. They're very lucky this didn't happen, because then those people would be suing the estate.
On another note, the way the settlement is phrased, it seems like the recipients (Keith and his family) will have taxable income and owe taxes amounting to at least $500,000, and maybe more like $1 million. I imagine Mr. Keith himself is in a pretty high tax bracket. If they don't report it, watch out. The IRS will have their livers for dinner.

I seriously don't think it was about the money. The Rodriguez transportes new about the brake's needing to be replaced and did nothing to fix the problem. They also tried to blame Mr. Covel, when he didn't do anything wrong. So h3ll yeah, teach those guys a lesson. They gambled on someone's life!! $2.8 Million will never replace the lose of a loved one. But now the Rodriguez Transportes are hurting too!

Usually when a celebrity wins money in some lawsuit, the winnings go to some charitable organization...however the money may not be going to Toby Keith himself, but to other family members who obviously don't make as much money and perhaps could use it. Just because Toby's rich doesn't mean he's sharing it all with them

I think it's great they have settled the lawsuit, but with the money Tobey Keith brings in, isn't it just another example of wanting to get money from a tragedy?
I have a hard time believing that this money is going to make the death of their husband/father any easier.

This is the first time I've ever heard about this story, but I'm glad they awarded Toby Keith's family $2.8 million dollars his family deserves in this terrible tragedy that happened 6 years ago to his father, H.K. Covel! The Rodrigurzes should feel guilty about what they did!
