Kate Bosworth won the weekend box office war.
Her gambling drama 21 took the top spot, earning $23.7 million.
Despite heavy press, Ryan Phillippe couldn't save his Iraq war drama Stop-Loss: It tanked, at No. 8, with just $4.5 million.
It joins a long string of Iraq-themed movies, including Charlize Theron's In the Valley of Elah, that have bombed.
The complete top 5:
1. 21, $23.7 million.
2. Dr. Seuss' Horton Hears a Who!, $17.4 million
3. Superhero Movie, $9.5 million
4. Tyler Perry's Meet the Browns, $7.8 million
5. Drillbit Taylor, $5.8 million

I like RP. He seems like a good, smart, level-headed, well-intentioned person. I like most of his movies and I want to go see this one. I think the movie's main fault is the subjects timing. Most people don't see war movies during war. I predict movies about the current conflict will do well in about 5 years from now (if it's over by then, or rather 5 years after the conclusion of any conflict). Probably something based on a true story. I'm sure many can relate to the themes in this film, but timing is timing... Never-the-less I'm sure RP put his heart and soul in acting this part and my husband and I will check it out.
Oh, have heard of his name for long. But didn’t know himself. He did a great job in this. I know his affairs are warmly discussed at the interracial dating club myinterracialmatch. c o m . Many girls love it very much
Ryan is hot and even more in this movie. It was a good movie so everyone should go watch it.
Why would I pay to watch the war when I can just turn on my TV? Hasn't Bush wasted enough of this country's money by killing people over there? I have better things to spend my hard earned money on, thank you!
Make Love Not War
A person's a person...no matter how small. (now THAT was a great movie!)
Klynn & J are both right.
"Stop Loss" won't make much because people have "war fatigue." They're tired of hearing about it, reading about it, seeing it. That's why this war is so unpopular with Americans. That's why these movies ("Stop Loss," "Rendition," "Lions For Lambs," "In The Valley Of Elah") don't do well. It's not because they're not good (whether they are or not is another discussion). It's not because movie go'ers refuse to support "liberal Hollywood." People are just tired of war.
Also, you have to factor in the entertainment vs thinking factor. People don't want to think or be challenged by movies. They want to be entertained. Look at the Oscar flicks. "Juno" is the only movie that did real well. The rest didn't make much $$. Excellent movies, but people don't want to think or be challenged. They want to be entertained.
Ryan can't make too much money because then Reese will seek alimony.
Don't know why they're comparing Kate and Ryan for this article. Iraq/war/911 movies are tanking because people are sick of the war. I try to not even watch it on the news anymore. People don't want depressing movies in an already depressing time. I support the troops, but not the war, and I'm not going to pay to see a movie about it.
I saw Stop-Loss over the weekend with my hubby who returned from Iraq in january....it's the most realistic display of what's going on in Iraq he's ever seen. It's a good movie and really touches home. It also is informative on how the country is screwing over it's troops when they complete their contracts. It's an eye opener and made me have an even deeper respect for troops and the struggles they face.
This type of movie touches to close to home right now. Ryan is a good actor; has nothing to do with him.
11:23 agreed!
Reese Witherspoon's last two movies were dismal failures - Rendition and Penelope. Us is singling out Ryan because they're so far up Reese Witherspoon's a** that they are pukifying. All you're doing, Us, is turning me even more against Little Miss Better Than Thou. I'm pretty normal so I'll bet a lot of people feel the way I do.
Stop Loss was good. 21 is supposed to be good also. YOu can;t really compare them because they're totally different types of movies.
Well 21 was a good movie. I will see Stop Loss next weekend, but superhero movie??? Why the hell did this crap make any money at all??
... that made the least money!
Stop-Loss was a good movie, and it's still in theaters, so you never know, but congrats goes to all the movies that made a lot of money, even to the movies that didn't do well!
This is a dumb headline b/c the movie was #1 but def. not b/c of Kate Bosworth. And why single out Ryan? There are other movies that "lost" at the box office, like numbers 2-6. Reese Witherspoon's publicist must be feeding Us Weekly these headlines. Lame.
I don't think Kate or Ryan had anything to do with the success or failure of their movies. People simply picked a fun-looking movie over a boring-looking movie.
I saw "Run Fatboy Run" this weekend - critics were pretty harsh, but I thought it was funny. I love Simon Pegg! :)
This was a really good movie. I don't think people realize what it was all about. The acting was great.
Well I went to see the movie and I thought that is was a great movie. I was moved and it made me think more about the war and our troops. Great job to the cast, director, and crew on a job well done. Ryan Phillipe go ahead wit yo bad self. You did dat boy!! And it was better than the one his ex wife did.
You forgot to mention Rendition, dear folks. Stop Loss' opening weekend was higher than same for Reese's FLOP, 4.5 for Stop Loss and 4.0 for Rendition. Stop Loss' budget is less than half of Renditions. Just call it like it is and stop favoring your favorite - like little Miss Type A has been.

This movies is based on less that 1% of our servicemen. The ones who joined the service for the wrong reasons. Any true soldier would never fight a stop-loss clause. It is not in there character. This film is the complete opposite of supporting our troops...it is just a lame attempt at once again trying to sway the public. Thank God these films are sinking! But, I love the fact that this lady who directed it will lose her a#$ on it. That in it self is worth it.
One downside: Ryan keeps picking these worthless films to portray...it will never help his acting career and he will forever be in Reese's shadow..hopefully he make wiser choices in the future.
It tanked because of people like me. Who have husbands that have fought or are fighting in Iraq. One day Hollywood will wake up and realize that war movies that are portrayed negatively are going to tank. There are to many of us "families" who are not going to support these films. Most servicemen/servicewoman are NOT going to fight a Stop-loss clause. So in actuality the film is only reaching out to a handful of servicemen and of course...democrats. But it looks to me that they are not even seeing these films!

He is damn fine!! I think that look is sexy!
Ryan always looks mean and angry. You can tell he has deep issues within. Poor soul.
Poor guy, it sounds like a good movie. I wish I could go see it, but I have a newborn. What happened to supporting our troops. This is based on what really goes on with our troops and no one wants to see it? Sad!
Ryan always looks mean and angry. You can tell he has deep issues within. I feel very sorry for him. Poor soul.
