Top 6 Go Broadway
Season five contestant Kevin Covais recaps the April 22 episode for Us
Andrew Lloyd Webber week has arrived, and I couldn’t be more excited! This is one week that I would have loved to perform on. It’s giving me high school choir flashbacks, when we performed an Andrew Lloyd Webber medley. OK, let’s talk about the Top 6 Idols.
Syesha Mercado sang “One Rock N’ Roll Too Many,” and she started the show with a bang! This was, in my opinion, her greatest performance yet, and I was absolutely captivated throughout. (I am willing to bet the rest of the male race will agree with me there!) No criticism here - she nailed it! I have a funny feeling she will be around another week after that great performance.
This week was a bit of a challenge for Jason Castro, who sang “Memory.” He has to be one of the most likeable guys around - and he is certainly a fan favorite among the ladies - but this week simply took him out of his comfort zone. The arrangement was beautiful, but he had a rough time giving the song the vocal strength it requires. He’ll be OK come elimination time, though.
Brooke White chose a gorgeous song called “You Must Love Me,” and although I am a fan of hers, she had a rough time with it. It was quite a surprise to see her stop and then restart the song, but I give her credit for doing such a brave thing in front of millions of viewers. What was unfortunate was that it did seem to affect her performance once she got started, specifically her vocals.
David Archuleta, who chose “Think Of Me,” is truly is a gifted vocalist. Week in and out he continues to prove that, and this week was no exception. He brought flavor to one of my favorites from “Phantom of The Opera.” My only concern is that I haven’t seen him switch it up and go up-tempo much at all throughout this season. Given that this was ALW week, he gets a pass for choosing a ballad. But let’s hope next week (and he will be there next week!) he steps outside the box a bit.
Carly Smithson sang “Jesus Christ Superstar” and brought so much energy tonight! I have always known that she was one of the best vocalists this year, but my favorite part of her performance was that she really showed personality. She took control on stage, and had fun, which is a really important part of any performance. Job well done!
Let me just go on the record and say I am picking this David Cook to take the whole thing this year. There is a reason that he closes out the show so often, and his version of “Music Of The Night” was masterful. He continues to display versatility in that he sang the song as if he were the Phantom on Broadway himself. This guy has given one solid performance after another. Bravo!
About this blogger: Season five fan favorite Covais, 18, just wrapped production on his feature film debut, College, to be released August 29 with backing from MGM Studios. “The movie stars Drake Bell, Andrew Caldwell and me, and is about three high school seniors who have the craziest weekend of their lives while visiting a college as prospective freshman,” Covais tells Us. “It’s going to be really funny!” New York native Covais currently resides in Los Angeles.

Is chicken little criticizing the greatness that is David Archuleta or am I reading it wrong?
