Kirsten Dunst is headed back to school, and it's not for a movie role.

In the April issue of W magazine, Dunst, 24, opens up about her lengthy film career - and her newest obsession.

The actress candidly explains how her career and life have evolved to the point that she's temporarily putting acting on hold to audit a few college-level art classes.

ON PROVING HERSELF AS AN ACTRESS…“After Marie Antoinette, I was feeling that I had to prove myself. Ugh. Like, I didn’t do it. I didn’t prove myself enough. Then I thought, Whatever. I’m in a really happy place, and I want to do a fun movie. Why do I want to be superserious chick all the time? I have a dark side, but I also like comedy, so I think next I want to do something that’s super over-the-top.”

ON RECENTLY BECOMING AN ART STUDENT…“It’s really about finding your style, rather than 'Hold the pencil like this.' I just need to learn the tools so that I can do the things that I want to do…It’s so private and I love it so much and it’s like a little secret in my heart. And the more I talk about it, the less control I feel I have. I don’t think everyone has to go to college. Just explore other things.”

ON BEING EXCITED TO HAVE A STUDENT ID…“I have my ID—it’s so exciting. I was showing it to my girlfriends in the restaurant last night. I’m like, ‘I can get money off movie tickets now!’”

I think taking a break from acting to pursue art opens Kirstin to another level of artistic expression - it is a venue where the visual image dominates. When she feels its the right time to return to acting, she will bring her art school lessons to her roles. It may not translate directly, but odds are it will impact her point of view and her approach, in terms of visualizing.

A great example of art impacting film (or film impacting art) is cult director David Lynch. He was a painter and got into directing because he loved paitings but "wanted to see them move." This allows him to include stunning and somtimes jarring visual images that tackle theme akin to complex regions of the human mind, including mania, depression, and dream states.

So, for Kirstin, it could be a smart move. And if she leaves acting for painting, more power to her. All creative people need to find the outlet that is right for them.

That's cool that she's got a little hobby going...all celebs should get one so that they won't be so caught up in all the hype surrounding them and have nervous breakdowns every five seconds. True, it's not like she's going to Harvard or something and studying something hard like engineering or astrophysics, but if she's excited about her art education, kudos to her!

Who said that to be a successful actress you need to be absolutely beautiful, i think she's very talented. I respect her as an actress even more knowing full well she has had a lucrative film career that's not solely based on looks. Why do we even think it's our right to judge someone's level of beauty, it's not "kind of" shallow its VERY shallow. Kudos Kiki!!! I know I'm one of the few people in the world that loved Elizabethtown, but I thought she was really good in it. It's great that she's going back to school. It's always good to have a backup plan, because you never know what can happen in Hollywood.
