Being an addict does not absolve on of responsibility, I don't see where anyone has said that either. It seems to be a common misconception that the label addict is a free pass for crimes committed while under the influence. That is hardly the case and anyone with knowledge of the justice system knows this. Treatment has been shown to work, that is why there are efforts made to see a person receives not only their punishment, but treatment. Punishment alone- odds are that will not keep the behaviour from repeating itself.

I'd recommend you read about the science behind dependency and addiction, the difference between the psychological aspects and the physical. It's out there is a person bothers to learn.

It is terrible to say that she is waste of life. She needs REAL help. She needs constant supervision and not to be surrounded by other users or these so-called "friends". All of these statements her parents are releasing are pointless--she needs someone responsible by her side at all times because she is out of her mind right now. She is wasting so much potential. My prayers are with her.

To those saying that addiction is an irresistible disease: So are you saying that no one has ever quit drinking for good? And if there are, but these people somehow had superior "genetics" allowing them to quit, then how did they get addicted in the first place?

Your doctrine is a bunch of subjectivist clap-trap, and no one really, truly believes it. It is advocated by people who want to leave a moral "out" for irresponsible, destructive behavior. It allows you to be rational most of the time, but get a free pass to indulge in wrong behavior some of the time without being held accountable for it. Power-hungry people also love this doctrine, because they use it to convince others to submit to their authority ("You can't do it alone, you need MY help").

Quitting is a matter of will power. Maybe you don't understand the concept of will power. Will power is used when things are hard, not when they are easy. When things are easy, you don't need will power. Yet, we can look around us every day and see that there are people exercising will power when the going gets tough. Your doctrine is an insult to these people. Notice the word "will" in will power, not "genetics" power. It is an act of WILL, a choice, a decision. We are not puppets being played on a string by some mysterious forces. We are free to choose our actions, and that means we can be held responsible for them.

No professional would diagnose anyone based upon a questionnaire. All questionnaires can do is flag potential abusive behavior. You seem to confuse alcohol abuse and alcoholism. Alcoholism is a chronic disease defined by physical addiction, which is defined by someone who would experience withdrawal symptoms, cravings, possibly a tolerance, and the loss of control over their behavior, such as placing their jobs or others at risk. Length of addiction often plays into a diagnosis. It is about dependence upon the chemical, not choosing to use said chemical.

As you do not say what you do in your father's practice I can only imagine that you have access to their records through your medical position which would allow you to see their symptoms. If not, you cannot know such information. Many alcoholics do not present as such, that is why there is a need for evaluations by those trained to do so. The people who are regulated by law to allow patients entry into rehab facilities in Cal. are not simply medical professionals, they are people who have been specifically trained and schooled on addiction and have been certified as such. Those professionals admitted Lindsay into rehab, hence the obvious conclusion is that she was evaluated by a trained addiction specialist who decided she was an addict of some sort, be it to alcohol or another substance. To ignore regulations and law would risk not only the individuals license or certification but to place the facility at risk, which I am sure you know based upon experience with your father's practice. Furthermore, no one here could know how she actually presents.

Anon 8:58 - I'm saying we fit the parameteres of BOTH alcoholism AND binge drinking defined by those retarded "questionnaires" given out at student health centers...when in all reality we drank like that for our college years and are done with it now. I'm not an alcoholic and I know the friends I spoke of aren't either.

What I'm saying is that I see actual alcoholics everyday with patients in my father's medical practice and Lindsay doesn't present like one...nor does Britney, or any of those Hollywood celebtards. They are spoiled, immature brats who have gone through life thinking the rules don't apply to them. They party insanely (different than alcoholism) b/c they're sucked into the hollywierd lifestyle and make stupid decisions b/c they live in a completely different "reality" than us. These girls are total trainwrecks, yes. But alcoholics? I doubt. But who knows, I obviously could be wrong since I don't know Lindsay or Brittney. I'm definitely right on the immature, spoiled brat thing though!

And what would you consider the parameters of alcoholism? How can you think you can decide that for others? The counselors are trained and there are definitions and there are standards that allow for the difference of alcoholics and binge drinkers. There are may places that people can educate themselves about the topic of addiction should they care to look.

I DOUBT this chick's a true addict...more likely just a spoiled little brat who's caught up in the Hollywood lifestyle and thinks rules don't apply to her b/c she's rich a famous.

The 'Big Book' I referred to is the 'Big Book of AA', friend. Hundreds of thousands of people have been getting, and staying, sober with it since the 1930's.

Will power works for doing your homework, pushing away from the table (sometimes), that sort of thing. True alcoholism and addiction is not only a physical disease, it is also a mental AND spiritual soul-sickness and it takes a spiritual solution practiced in community with other alcoholics and addicts to begin to live a sober, sane life.

Well...this story really should come as no surprise to anyone considering she has been planted in about every single bar or nightclub around since she got out of "rehab". That was a total joke BTW, only made her look like a fool. I hope she wakes up and smells the vomit in the corner.....that's her face pressed into it most mornings.

You are simplifying addiction which can be not only a result of a genetic predisposition but a symptom of severe mental trauma. Would you say to a cancer patient, it's will power, get over it? Or a sexual abuse victim, get over it, use will power? It is a disease, very few who suffer from any type of addiction get over it by themselves. I've watched people try to get sober themselves, watched them shake and vomit and claw themselves while sobbing because of all they have lost. Many addicts who stop often substitute addictions with other dependencies and, as the other poster said, continue on with the same behavior, only sober. Education is good, people should try it before judging.

What she needs to do is first, have a 72 hour 'blackout' period to allow herself to kick the drug. Then she needs to be in a program that allows her NO CONTACT with anyone for 30 days. (This is not unusual for REAL programs. It allows them to clear their head and not have outside influences get to them. Its just HER own personal me time, so to speak.) After her 30 day lock down period, then she should have her 90 days with visits and a chance to go off grounds for a bit. After that, if she has been clean the whole time, then move her to an outpatient program where she gets to go home but is tested randomly. After a year or so of that, see how things are going for her.

bottom line is this. the girl does not have an addiction. she likes to drink. shes 21, hand her a beer. she is stupid for driving drunk, as it can ruin the life of her and endanger innocent peoples lives. obviously rehab is a waste for her so don't send her back, show her pictures of drunk driving accidents and let her talk to victims and the families of people who have lost loved ones because of a drunk driver. i bet u no one can come up with a better solution than this. prove me wrong.
